So we went to the doctor. It went well but did not say whether it is allergies or asthma. The way I understood it is the allergies cause asthma. He was given a lot of medication tohelp with the allergies. He was put on one medication called Pulmicort which is used by a nebulizer. Has anyone had a little one on it or used it before? He has to use it once a day. Please pray that it is alleries and not asthma.

Unfortunately, they kinda correlate. I have allergies and asthma and so does my 3 year old. I was on Pulmicort and other steroids for it growing up. The thing is you dont want them to be on it long. My son was given the Pulmicort, I used it only once or twice but really only used the Xopenex, which really works, ONLY WHEN HE NEEDS IT. The steroids make you feel crappy.

He has been on Albuterol syrup daily for a couple of months. We where told to stop that. So we have the a Albuterol syrup for when he is really bad. Which one should we not take very long?

All but the Xoponex. They become almost "immune" to the Albuterol syrup as my sister-in-law and I have found. It will stop working on them after a while. The steroid you dont want to use for long because it does have a lot of side effects (moodiness, increase in appetite, swelling, stunts growth, etc) Ask your doctor for the Xoponex that you put in the nebulizer. It doesnt make them as shakey like the Albuterol and it works faster. I wish it had been around when I was a kid.

When my daughter was 9 months old they told me she had asthma. She hasn't had any issues since though. She does however get a cold every october when the weather changes, and I make her take the preventative inhaler during that time. I've had allergies and asthma most of my life. This is actually my worst time of year. My allergies make my asthma horrible. I start taking allergy medicine and Qvar in may and take it through August. Obviously you can't really know what Andrew's pattern is yet, but I think it's best to find out what his triggers are and then use the medication during those times, instead of year round. Steroids are great for their purpose, but they can come with some hefty side effects.

That is what the doctor said about the Albuterol. So he is only to take that if he really needs it. We also got the Albuterol Solution for the nebulizer. Heis to take Pulmicort daily for right now. I dont know if that will change if the allergy medication helps. He was given Clarinex as well. We see him in a month for the allergy testing. He said for Drew's age that was the only thing for him right now.

My daughter also did the allergy testing. It said she wasn't allergic to anything, but I was also told that they can't really know until closer to 2. She was 9 months for that also. I never took her back to get tested again. Are they doing the prick test, or another kind?

Maybe ask your doctor to switch the Albuterol to Xoponex. It works better, faster, and has a lot less side effects.

My pediatrician (who took care of me as a kid too) has been giving it to Alexander since he was 20 months. I know at the hospital I worked at they gave it to kids as young as 6 months. I guess they believe the side efeects on kids that young are less than the albuterol. It is still considered relatively new so I think some doctors who are old-school are still hesitant to perscribe it. I know Alex and I have been better since switching.

huh, I thought the benefits were pretty controversial? I heard that it is better because it doesn't cause the racing heart and stuff. I haven't seen my allergist in a while. I think he hates me because I never follow through with all the crap he tells me to do. I'd like to hear what he has to say about it though!

It definitely does not make you so shakey and doesnt make your heart race. Yeah, see what he says, the more input the better.

He does not see his doctor back until 7/23/08. We ask him about it then. O off the topic my baby Drew is going to be 1 on 7/20/08. I did not think the first 3 months where going to end. With his problems somebody had to stay up with him 24 hours a day. My mom and I got maybe 4 hours a sleep a night. It was the longest 3 months ever but he is my very healthy chucky monkey.
