posted 21st Jun
My daughter will be turning 1 on July 02, 2008 and i was wondering when can i start giving her cows milk instead of formula. I'm almost done with her formula and i want to start soon. Is it bad? Thanks!

Only when your doctors says so.

The earlier you introduce things to your baby before the doctor OKs it, the more they are likely to develope an allergy.

I started mine at 10 months and they were completly weened off of formula by 11 months and not that i didnt try but once they got the milk they didnt want that nasty formula. Each child is diffrent but i would say now is an ok time to start.

I made the switch before her birthday. Well started it anyway. She was completely on Cow's milk a few days or a week before her birthday. Once that last can of Formula ran out I said "forget it."

If her birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks, it would be ok to start introducing it. I started by putting 2 oz of milk and 6 oz of formula in an 8 oz bottle... then half and half after a few days of that seeing if she tolerated it.... then down to 3/4 milk to 1/4 formula... then to just milk. For my oldest it was easy on her stomache that way, and it gives you a chance to see if there is going to be any sort of reaction. Watch for bad gas and runny stool... any problems like that, and you will need to talk to the doc... my youngest needed to go to soy milk.

i think it is fine also... atleast to start the process.

I would just do 1/4 milk 3/4 formula and once that goes over well... go to 1/2 and 1/2. and then 1/4 formula 3/4 milk. and then just milk!

Making the switch completely won't hurt either if she's already been given the opportunity to try it. However now is the ideal time to start weaning from formula/breastmilk to cow's milk.

The only thing is if you're planning on banning the bottle at one year, you may want to wait on transitioning to cow's milk if your child gets upset with change.

I have 3 kids.. We started giving each child regualr Whole D Milk at the age of 1. But ease into it. I wouldn't do it all at once right away.. Regualr milk may cause them to have some constipation.. Also they might have allergies to it. With my last two kids. I mixed Half Silk (soy milk) half Whole milk... That was the best thing I could have done. I consulted my child's P. And they said that that was a great idea.. And it was totally healthy for them.. The child needs whole milk. It helps their brains grow and such.. Yay!! For your child turning 1! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
