Question about baby

posted 21st Jun
I know this may be a weird question, but my baby hasn't pooped since 4:00 yesterday afternoon. His dr's office is closed till tomorrow, so just wondering if anyone else has been through this, and was there something you did for the baby,or did you just wait it out?

Wait it out unless he seems like he's in pain or straining to poop and can't. Are you breastfeeding?? Its very normal for breastfed babies to go longer in between poops after the first week or two, as their bodies begin to use all that good nutrition. There is no junk in breastmilk so their bodies use it all and it takes a while to build up enough waste to make a poop! My daughter pooped like once a week after she was a few weeks old and that was perfectly normal and fine. I was concerned at first, but the doctor assured me its normal. Even formula babies can go a day or two in between as they get older and their gut matures. I'm sure he's fine!

Lydia stopped pooping when she wast a couple days old.  She didn't poop for four days!!!  The dr. said it was pretty normal for babies to do that because their body doesn't know what it's doing yet.  As long as he's passing gas, he should be fine.  Try taking his temp rectally.  If he still hasn't pooed by tomorrow, go ahead and call, but they probably won't do anything until it goes too long without coming out!

That is ok, if she doesn't seem to be in pain, just wait till you can speak with her pedi.

Lydia poops four-five times a day!  I was told that was normal because breastmilk is a natural laxative!

ok I'll wait a while since the dr. isn't open tomorrow and goes back on monday anyway. Yes I am breastfeeding, and he is passing gas like crazy so I guess he's ok.

It is definitely not a weird question.  I was worried too when Lydia did it.  But, newborns are just learning how to eat, digest, and eliminate.  It takes a while for their bodies to get it down.  Passing gas means there is no blockage that you have to worry about.  Just a body not knowing how to pass stool yet.  If he seems to be straining or fussy, go ahead and check the temp rectally.  Put vaseline on a rectal thermometer and put it in there until it reads.  No need to wiggle it around.  That is what my doc said to do and wow did it work!  She filled two diapers.  I went to change the first one and she was still going so we had to put another under her to catch it.  Just watch out, it can SHOOT!!  He also told me I could put a rubber glove on and put some vaseline on my pinkie and put that in there to "stimulate the rectum"  EW!  I didn't feel right about that, so we did the thermometer.  Here's hoping to poopy diapers!

It is at FIRST. They always poop after every feeding for the first few weeks, maybe even longer depending on the baby. But eventually as their gut matures and they really start digesting it completely, they will probably slow down. And every babys gut is slightly different, so it definitely varies from kid to kis, but at some point if she is exclusively breastfed its very normal to go a few days between poops.

She's 5 1/2 months old and still poops at LEAST 4 times a day!  Must just be my kid!!  I eat a lot of fruit, too, so IDK if that has anything to do with it.

My son does too, and he's 4 months old and exclusively breastfed. I kept wondering when he'd start pooping less...never happened! I guess we're just "lucky" that way, haha.

Editted to stay on topic...yes, it is ok to go a day or two (sometimes more) between poops. Just watch out, because when it does come, it'll probably be an explosive blowout diaper, lol. My son once went 2 days without going and boy did I have a mess to clean up when he finally did.
