Have you had an amnio?

posted 20th Jun
I have to get an amnio in a little over 2 weeks and I am scared to death. My sister had the CVS done with my nephew and she said it was the most horrible pain she had every felt. Does it really hurt that bad?   Also afterwards do you feel okay? I mean my bf will be going with me so I don't have to drive home. It's in the afternoon...will I be okay to go to work in the morning? Do you bleed afterwards? Also anything else you know and can share would be great!   Thanks.

Hi there....how old are you? I am guessing that when you said Amnio, its for the down syndrome test?

They wanted to do one on me because I'm over 35 but my mom had one done and it caused her to have a miscarriage so no way am I even taking a chance.

well I already had my first trimester screen and there is something wrong for sure. They just need to do the amnio to find out what. They are thinking trisomy 13 or 18.

edited to add: I am 28

The amnio isnt as bad as some people make it out to be. I had one about 36-37 weeks just to check the lung maturity. Its just a really sharp pain. There are some minor cramps afterwards. Dont stress too much about it.

I have never had it done because I did not need to although I had to get an ultrasound for down syndrome and they measured baby's fluid in the neck and whatever else they do when they administer the scan and it came back that the baby has very minimal chance or next to nothing of having down syndrome so then I did not need to get Amnio done.

I dont know what I would have done if I was asked to do that because you do have a choice. And I have heard quite a few stories about it. They say it can harm the baby too, that some women can actually miscarriage after it. BUt then sometimes, people like to dramatise things and you hear of the bad more than the good...

I am not trying to scare you even more. Just ask a lot, a whole lot of questions before you get it done because you do have a choice...but I do understand you completely. You would want to know everything about the baby.

I wish you all the best.

Yeah the fluid at the back of the neck is at 9mm...it should be 3...with the blood test they gave me a 1in 5 chance. Although since the fluid is now around the head and all down the sides of the baby they know something it wrong but don't know what.

they actually have the test now so you dont need the needle in your belly button, mine was done by drawing blood through my wrist, the scariest part is the wait. i wouldnt have the test when it was in the belly button cuz docs say that if your baby didnt have down syndrome than the needle in the belly button can cause it. its not just for down syndrome it test for trisomy 18 and many others, i had mine done like 2 months ago, luckily mine came back great, my baby is healthy

really? they can get the babies dna from the wrist? do you know what the test is called? I know there is a chance of miscarriage but I need to know what is wrong. My son was stillborn in October and I can't go through that again.

I just had mine a week ago, and I was worried about the pain, and EVERYONE I asked said it was minimal. They were right. You feel the TINIEST pin prick, and then a weird sensation..kind of like sticking your finger in your belly button, and that was it. When they took the needle out, right at that moment, I felt a little cramping, I think it lasted 15 seconds, and that was it. No side effects. I got the results ,everything is fine, its a girl..which I already knew. But I am 41 and I needed to have one. ** Also, no bleeding, a mild bruise that I still have but I bruise easy and they said rest for 24 hours. I went to a wedding the next day in the evening. I was fine. I had zero issues. I hope yours goes as well.

No worries on the amnio. Its a piece of cake.

I have had 2....one with my daughter and one with my son. With my daughter it hurt sooo bad they had to give me morphine and I tried to slap the needle away so they had to hold me down BUT that was also the same night I found out I lost her and I was really sick and the doctors told me that probably contributed to it being painful for me. With my son, I got it done to make sure his lungs were mature enough to get induced....I was scared from the last time that it was going to be painful.....it really wasnt that bad.....I did have to clinch Jimmy's fist a little but they had to stick the needle in me twice. They offered me numbing medicine too but I declined it bc they said it was just another long needle going in my belly. I promise it really isnt that bad! I started having contractions right after wards but couldnt feel them and I started to bleed.....I am not sure if I would have went into labor bc of it or not bc I was induced anyways...but my contractions did stop before I was induced but the bleeding didnt, but they told me I was just losing my mucus plug so I dont know.
There is a risk of miscarriage if you have one though, but I guess your already at that risk, and you getting is going to be for the better....I didnt know if they told you that or not. Hopefully you wont expierence bleeding or anything....I was 37 weeks and 6 days when I got mine. Do you know if they are going to monoitor you after they do it? They did me but I dont know if they do it or not when your as far along as you are. Oh yea and just pray that little peanut dont jump around (thats why they had to stick me twice bc he moved) but they can poke your little one if they jump and you cant jump either! Its not that bad though like I said!

Ok sorry so long lol

Oh yea you should definetely be able to go to work the next day as long as your not cramping or bleeding.

I really don't know what they are going to do. This isn't my doctor...it's the specialist I was sent to. I was too upset from the news to ask a lot of questions. The genetic guy mentioned that they like to have the women who have them "take it easy" for a couple of days. I don't know what that means. Like bedrest? Or just no lifting? augh. I am going nuts here.

I dont know about the taking easy....I think it would be more like no lifting or exercise and stuff like that, bc there isnt really thing you feel the next day or anything. If you have any cramping or bleeding I am sure they would tell you to be on bed rest though bc of the risk. QueenV (I dont know if you remember her or not but she lost her little boy to sids) had an amino in her pregnancy too and I am pretty sure she was home the same night, but then again I am pretty sure she was far along in her pregnancy too. It may be different since your still not that far along. Whatever the case though make sure if you have any cramping or anything unusal at all to call them or go in and dont do anything at all. I was scared with Lil J that I was losing him bc of the bleeding right after having it. Have you tried looking it up online? Maybe you can find something about someone having it around the same time you will be?
