Your opinion about Quad Screen

posted 20th Jun
I had my FIRST OB/GYN appointment today (after Im already 16 weeks...oi) and they asked if I wanted to do the Quad Screen test....he fact that I have no known disorders in my family, I declined.... Did I make the right decision?

Also, a question for you, if you did the quad screen, and found a defect if given the option would you terminate the pregnancy?

The only time you should need to take the test is if you think you will terminate the pregnancy after finding out results and getting an amniocentesis done to find out for sure. But, if you are going to keep your baby regardless and love them unconditionally then there's no reason to get the test. The blood test has a high false-positive rate!

I had it and it came back positive for down syndrome, i didnt terminate the pregnancy and it turned out to be a false positive, so i have a perfectly healthy baby boy

It was very scary and depressing when i got the results so i wish i never had the test but all turned out ok anyway.

I had the quad screen done, all false readings at 16weeks....

Only to go back at 21 weeks for my anatomy scan to find out my son had the most severe form of Spina Bifida with Hydrocephalus. Apparently I had a false negative reading for the quad screen or we would have caught it earlier.

We had multiple doctors tell us the same thing. Our son would be lucky to even make it full term. And even if he didhe would havenot lived very long and would have suffered. So we chose to terminate the pregnancy. That was 10 months ago and we are TTC starting last month... ;)

I would have. I didn't get one and now I am left with lots of questions. I have to wait till my baby girl is here to know anything. I wouldn't have done anything with unexpected results, but at least I would know something one way or another. That is just my opinion.

I disagree. Later on when you get a 20 or so week ultrasound, you could be told that something may be wrong and now you just have to wait and see. If I would have gotten the quad screen they would have had a better idea. Reassurance and/or preperation is another reason to have it done.

Mine also came back with a 1/200 risk for my baby having downs. Then they sent me in for a Level 2 Ultrasound to detect any anomalies on the baby and it turned out my baby girl was just fine and dandy. They had me completely stressed for 2-3 weeks! After receiving the Level 2 ultrasound my risk dropped from 1/200 to 1/571. The only reason why it didnt drop even more was because they spotted a calcium deposit in 1 of the 4 chambers of her heart which they say can be a signs for downs but they cant tell for sure because even perfectly healthy babies are born with that as well. Everything else was completely perfect. So even though I still have a 0.17% chance of my girl having downs... it doesnt matter!

exactly! I also had it so that I could be prepared in case something did come back wrong. I would have never decided to terminate - but i felt that i should be educated and prepared rather thanto have a complete shock when she was born.
