breastfeeding questions..reflux or fast let down?

posted 16th Jun
We have had some issues from the very beginning.. gagging, pulling off, milk out the nose, spitting up quite a bit. A lot of these I found can be signs of both reflux and a fast let down.. I am pretty sure I have a fast let down, I definitely am producing over supply of milk and it seems if I pump before nursing it helps, she nurses better and doesn't pull off. But what if she has reflux too? She coughs some but not a lot ..she gags out of nowhere sometimes too. And for the past 3 days she has had what seems to be stomach pains to me.. crying really loud, showing signs of hunger and the breast satisfies her but not long, and I'm worried I'm making it worse by putting her to the breast to nurse if it is just stomach pains and not her being hungry.. but I don't know for sure and think.. what if she is hungry, but then shedoesn't nurse long and spits up.I feel so bad for her.. I'm tired and haven't been getting any sleep, it seems worse at night. I have stopped drinking milk thinking maybe that could be the cause but it doesn't seem to be. Any ideas?

I would think overactive let down. That was my problem. You can block feed. One breast each feeding. Rub the first of the flow with a towel, then feed. It sounds funny, but I swear by it. So do many other women.

I feel like you are reading my mind... we had the exact same thing happen except we had projectile vomitting four times and hiccups after almost every feeding... I did some reading on both reflux and fast let down... I made some changes. I talked to our pediatrican. He perscribed her zantac. I also thought she could be having a reaction to something I ate... so I gave up a couple of things. The crying for us was gas...

I only use one breast per feeding, suggested by lactation consultant because of how much milk I was producing and staying engorged. I will try using a towel, seems easier than pumping before each time. Not exactly sure what to do though.. should it be ran under warm water or anything? thanks

You just massage and squeeze, but not squeezing hard or anything.

I would talk to your pediatrian about it. Try to count how many times she eats each day and then how many times she spits up, hiccups, or whatever. Take this information to the pediatrician.

Here is some links that may help you:

If it is reflux, one thing you can look into is having your LO wear a hazelwood necklace.
My friend's son had BAD reflux and was on meds for it. Her mom told her about these necklaces so she gave it a try. She says it has almost cured his painful reflux. She was able to take him off meds after 2 weeks of him wearing it.
She told me about them because my daughter has had eczema since she was 3 months and nothing was really helping. Since she has been wearing it (about 3 months) she hardly has any breakouts at all. Supposedly they work by absorbing excess acid in the body (the wood has that natural property).
Anyway, you can find them at www.hazelaid.com
Hope it helps.
