posted 16th Jun
I am on the fence on this and looking for some information from any moms that have or are home schooling.
I think I realy want to do this. It is just so easy to go to public school.
What information do you guys have on this subject......

This is the program I used.

It's religion based, but you don't have to teach the bible course. I didn't study that.

http://www.aop.com/sos/

You use it on the computer, and the computer checks most of the work, but the "teacher" [you] corrects projects and essays and what not.

I was homeschooled and now my husband (he went to public school but had really bad experiences) and I agree that we want to homeschool our kids too. I have a few websites you can check out....

http://www.successful-homeschooling.com/
http://www.home-school.com/
http://unschool.info/

Some of the forums on those sites are really informative.

It can be hard be there are so many options as far as making a schedule that works for you. Whats really important is keeping yourself educated on your options and of course socializing your kids.

that is just the beginning of it.

It could have just known some poorly home schooled kids but, when I hear home school I cringe. Yes school can be cruel and sometimes classes are over crowded but, every kid I have ever known, who was home schooled was a social mess. Now these were very very christian families so, I'm sure that makes a huge difference. These kids thought anyone who didn't read the bible nearly all day were going straight to hell and had no clue how to take in people who were different from them. It was really really sad.

Thank being said, if you plan on socializing your kids and not beating the bible into them, then I guess it can be a really positive thing. I've just never experienced it first hand as a good thing.

if it's for religious reasons, I'd suggest a private school over home schooling but, that's me.

That is terrible, I'm sorry she had to go through that. Stuff like that just drives me crazy.

My husband as a child was forced into taking all kinds of medication (ritalin at 8 years old) and therapy from the time he was in elemantry all the way through highschool. Why? Beccause he was the kind of kid that wouldn't do his homework but pass all of the tests with flying colors. They took that as a sign of "depression" and ADD/ADHD. He hated it! and he wasn't depressed he was just simple bored out of his mind and after the doctors relized they couldn't "fix" him all he got was a 'sorry, guess your just fine". He became so fed up with the school system after that, I guess thats why he is all for homeschooling.

We are relegious however not a beat the bible type.

And she is in social situations already
going to neighborhood activities (craft classes) and she has dance.
I think she is more social than I am. And home schooling now has a whole organized group where the kids all get to gether for field trips and what not just like other schools.
And you can do electives at the schools but main coarses at home.

I agree..its the bible thumpers that really tend to shut their kids out when it comes to homeschooling. I mean there is nothing wrong with mixing religion with homeschooling but when its used as a form of "brainwashing" thats where it crosses the line.

My mother homeschooled all of us and taught us about god and all that jazz but she NEVER forced it into our heads. Some of the homeschool groups that we joined were so paranoid about us being a Catholic family you'd hear the different families saying "Oh they aren't real christians they are going to hell, they don't preach the bible every day!" or god forbid during our P.E. days at the park if a group of public school kids ever wanted to use the same gym we were using the parents would be all "RUN! Grab you kids! Its the public schoolers!!!" "BAD BAD KIDS!!" I mean like come on, get over yourselves! Like your kids are little angles! I can't recall how many of their kids did drugs and were sneaking out of the house late at night.it was so freaking crazy that these people could think that just because they are homeschooled they'd never do anything bad! ANYWHO! my mom got so fed up with there paranoia we left the group lol!

rant rant....>->

nothing wrong w/being religious.

the family I knew basically didn't let their kids go out side except for church and god forbid someone different looked at any of them cross eyed.

I'm sure things are different now but, this is just my gut reaction when moms ask the opnion on home school. I'd still much rather send them to private school but, as long as you're doing it the smart way, I guess it can be just as good.

We are not christian but, we've found a non denominational private school that's focused on diversity, arts and science. I can't wait to get our kids in. I think it's the perfect fit for our family.

IDK about here in tx but, in WA even if you are not the religion of the school, you can go. Instead of taking prayer class or what ever they have alternatives.

I'm pagan and my husband is athiest so, any school our kids go to cannot force them to pray or worship in any way.

We haven't decided if we'll start our kids at K or wait until 2nd grade. It's about 10K a year and that's a bit much just for the basics. we'll probably wait for 2nd grade when we feel we'll get our monies worth.
I think something like 80-90% of the kids who graduate HS there go on to ivy league schools.

To be very honest no I didn't, I had a wide variety of friends, and not just homeschoolers but public schoolers as well. I was involved in all kinds of classes, art, piano, bass guitar, theather voice lessons, social groups. The ONLY time I ever felt out of place was when I was in that group I was talking about, they were so controling with their kids and treated me like some kind of outcast because I didn't live up to their standards.
