re: cereal...

4 oz every 3 hours isn't a lot.  I don't know why people keep thinking it is.  And I HIGHLY suggest waiting on cereal.  I started at 4 months and at 5 months my son got really sick from it.  Trust me, it's not worth having your child be sick.  I would rather him eat every 2 hrs than go through that again.

Ask your doctor. There was another thread like this one where most everyone screamed no but a nurse (or maybe she was a doctor?) said that sometimes it's ok, given certain circumstances. It nevers hurts to ask!

At my daughter's one month appointment, her pedi told me to start putting cereal in her bottle b/c he suspected she had reflux. I did the whole cereal thing, and it made her so terrible constipated (cereal + formula = concrete), so I called my pedi about the constipation and he told me to put corn syrup in her bottle to regulate her. Well, corn syrup is straight sugar, and I really wasn't happy with giving her so much sugar (formula has enough sugar to begin with), so without calling my doc back, I quit with the cereal in the bottles, AND with the Karo, and she's been perfectly fine. She still gets a little constipated from time to time, so I just take a Q-tip with vaseline on the end, and stimulate her little highny...it works everytime. She just turned 4 months, and I've started giving her a couple table spoons of cereal out of a bowl, and she loves it! (I have rice cereal with bananas in it...yum).
If your little guy seems hungry, I'd either up his ounces, or else feed him and hour sooner...Good Luck with him!

I'd up the Formula. I know my little Heart had to be run differently, becuase during his Hospital visists they'd starve him, (or screw up his feeding schedule) so we'd have to keep rebuilding him, but at 1 month he was eating 4 - 5oz every 4 hours, and by 2 months we got him up to 5 - 6 oz in the same period. Umm ok so at that time yes it was EBM but still. and the Nurse who kept screwing him up would say "he needs to eat a minimum of 1 oz for every hour....Trollop....He ate 4 -5 oz every 4 hours, but she kept trying to make us feed him every 2 hours, and get the 4 oz into him then. ....and my math is supposed to be bad... he was too full to eat more than 2 oz every 2 hours (insert more various and numerous swear words here aimed at that retard nurse), so we couldn' get him back on track and increasing until he was almost 2 months. So I would definitly go the route of upping his formula, even if it is just to 5oz. Also myself at 1 month my Mom says I was easily eating 6 oz every 3-4 hours, and long before my second month was eating 8 oz every 4 hours.

I don't think 4 oz every 3 hours is alot. Babies should be eating 2-3 ounces for every pound. So how much does your little one weigh?

Cereal in bottles is a no-no unless reflux is present. It could lead to childhood obesity, it is a choking hazard, and it could also lead to allergies later down the road.

I wouldn't suggest it to anyone, but if you are still considering it. Talk to your pedi.

I agree to everything you just said EXCEPT that it could lead to child hood obesity.  Like I have said before, lazy parents lead to child hood obesity.

True! I dont really know if I agree with the obesity part, I was just stating what I found in my research about it...

I guess from what I read: It has to do with the cereal teaching them to over eat, by expanding their stomachs. Making them have to intake more and more to keep them full.

I know.  I have seen that too but I don't agree with cereal in a bottle.  I see what you are saying about expanding their bellies.

I started giving Kalen cereal in the bottle when he was about 2 months and he has been fine with it. I don't give it to him every day or all the time. Do what you think your baby needs.

I just talked to my doc about it, because my big boy has been downing 60+ ounces a day since he was about a month old. And he said that we could go ahead and give him a little cereal when he turns two months.
