My husband has a bratty 7 yr old little brother and an iritating mom and 4 other siblings and they dont believe in hand washing or that kids carry germs. They think its cute to have toddlers hold babies, even preemies. I am scared of what will happen when they come over.

If you dont feel comfortable then I would not do it. I for sure would not let people touch my baby with handwashing.

I bought a costco size bottle of hand sanitizer and put it on our coffee table. I also strategically places several smaller bottles throughout the house. Even if you were going to stay on the other side of the room, you had to use the hand sanitizer. In order to hold them, you had to go to the bathroom and wash your hands. Like I said, my son's shower was 2 weeks after he came home. I wore him in a front pack and didn't let anyone else hold him. Both my kids were fall/winter babies, so we didn't have too much interaction with other people until the weather got better, at which point they were older. I still carry hand sanitizer in my diaper bag and make people use it to hold Ethan =)

Ok, I did buy a couple of those and funny enough it is already on my coffee table., but these people are just ignorant. When my son was born, I would ask people to wash their hands and his sister just said "oh come on and grabbed him" Mind you she is a nurse! My husbands little brother who was 4 at the time was sitting next to my baby coughing and I asked him to move and they got all mad. My mother in law had just fixed my nieces shoes and touched the bottom and then went to grab my boy and I said, please go wash your hands since you touched her shoes" and she said "oh I wont hold him then" Then behind my back they said I was paranoid. Well, low and behold a couple days later my poor baby had a cold. If all that happened then, I am just afraid of what is to come.

If they dont listen and do those things, then they dont touch or hold baby. My baby's health is more important then people getting their feelings hurt IMO.

LOl at all the hand sanitizer. I am on that bandwagon and have it stationed all over the house and also in the diaper bag like you ladies. I get some lip from people about the hand-washing but everyone complies... however some of my in-laws smoke and the docs told me that they couldn't hold Paige unless they laida receiving blanket over their clothes. Well, you can imagine how that went over! They huffed and complained but they didn't get to hold her without that blanket-barrier.

I've gone through the same. My husband's family smokes and it's such a hassle! They left the NICU smelling like cig smoke one time! I was so humialted. It's been such a fight but I'm way more concerned about my children and their well being than whether some one thinks I'm too paranoid or rude.

Yeah, Im to that point. Before my husband used to dismiss whatever I said and let them hold him and stuff but he surprised me this time by saying to his family at the shower that no one is going to see her for about a month after she is home.
