fat acceptance movement misconceptions
posted 23rd Mar
The fat acceptance movement seems to have a lot of misconceptions that people actually believe. I've never once read somewhere that it promoted an unhealthy lifestyle but most people seem to thrive on that.
What do you think?
quoteposted 23rd Mar
I think people thrive on that misconception because, bottom line, most people are fat due to lifestyle choice (note I use the term "most" as I realize more than almost anyone how this is not always true). However the fat acceptance movement basically states that people deserve to be treated fairly and with respect no matter what their size or lifestyle choice.

I guess I don't really know. I pretty much feel like maybe labeling oneself as fat/nonfat is stupid anyway. We aren't lattes. How about just self acceptance period.

I second this whole heartedly!

My only issue is when fat people start bashing thin people---"meat is for men, bones are for dogs" etc ice heard much worse
Or when fat people act like someone who was formerly thick turned into a pod person because they got committed to being healthy and happened to lose weight from it---I lost 30lbs and a couple of my friends acted like I'd betrayed them and kept saying how I was losing all my sex appeal/curves/junk, etc
I am ALL about accepting an loving the body you're in, but think you should NEVER be satisfied with the status quo and always strive to be better, healthier, happier, whether that means losing weight, making you're goal of running a mile in under 10min, dropping blood sugar or BP, getting off meds, fitting back into clothes, looking firm and smooth in a special outfit, etc

No it doesn't. It's just that being healthy isn't defined by the number on the scale.
It is very possible to be perfectly healthy and over weight. Aside from the fact that I have a high BMI, everything else is in perfect condition. But I'm considered unhealthy because I'm fat. Being fat and being unhealthy are two different things, even though they have become synonymous with each other. Just because you should accept fat does not mean that you should sit on your ass eating lard all day.
It's for people like me, that even if I was at a healthy BMI, I couldn't fit in anything smaller than a size 10, which is still considered plus size. Acceptance of the fact that I will never ever, ever fit into a size 2, because that would literally be impossible.
But it is a matter of personal perception. There are usually other issues most people are "dealing" with by acting out by sitting on ass, eating tub o lard.

Hahahaha!!
I've never heard of this movement you're talking about, what is it?
quoteposted 23rd Mar
I've never heard of this "Fat Acceptance Movement". However, I've seen a lot of pictures that compare a group of skinny women and "healthy women" and every once in a while I see the "meat is for the man, blah, blah, blah I feel like smurf about myself so I must bash skinny women" pictures.

I think it's stupid and derogatory.
Not everyone who is "fat" is fat because they want to be. Many have medical issues, or some are unable to burn the fat cells because they were established at such a young age that they've split far too many time to ever be caught up on.
That being said....MOST over weight people, are overweight because they're not doing what they can to live the healthiest lifestyle possible. And that's not something that I feel people should just be complacent doing.
I am really into eating right and fitness and it really makes my skin crawl that this is kind of perpetuating bad behavior.
YES, fat or not, people should be treated equally and respected.
People should also respect themselves and want to lead a more healthy and fit lifestyle.

*slow clap*
Agreed!
I was fat and "healthy" in that I had ZERO health issues. But I was NOT fit at all and was tired and felt like crap. I started to get fit and went to the gym to up my endurance so I felt better playing at the park and carrying/chasing/etc with my son an walking all damn day at the zoo.
Now I'm still curvy, but my BMI is normal. I'm not skinny, nor do I want to be particularly, but I damn sure am HEALTHY AND FIT!!! And my 3 year old can't outrun me! SCORE!!!
Zomg...I miss running. Come on, baby! Bake til May and then let's get moving

Then ignore fat and happy?

As a fat chick, I really hate the "meat is for the man" kind of crap people post everywhere. They would have a fit if a skinny girl posted something about skinny girls being better than big girls. It's no different. It's discriminating against another woman's body either way and that's wrong.

The "look" of being "fat" isn't the issue. The issue is that you become unfit and unhealthy.
Belly fat is linked to almost every form of cancer there is due to it's rapid cell division. Along with a number of other health risks.
Your heart, your joints, your immune system, your mental health, your respiratory function, etc.
"fat" isn't looked down upon because it's "ugly" ugly can be skinny. Ugly can be anything. "fat" is an issue because it's associated with slovenliness and unhealthiness.
