Child BMI

My first question is does anyone know if these BMI calculators for kids are even valid? I just did my oldest son's at at height of 48 inches and a weight of 43.5 lbs at the age of 6 and it said his BMI was 13 and that his BMI was less than the 3rd percentile. It also said that a BMI this low could be causing developmental or physical delays. I find this very concerning, we are constantly feeding him because he's constantly hungry (now I know why) but it's obviously not enough of the right kind of food. We're very healthy eaters so junk food is a treat not a common occurance, but I'm wondering what I could change in his diet to get more fat on him. Any suggestions for high fat, child friendly foods?

especially for kids. they're ridiculous.

BMI calculators do not take into account muscle tone, or even the way your bones are formed! I was OBESE at 5'4 175, but yet my ribs, hips and collar bone all stuck out

Bmi calculators are ridiculously stupid

talk to his DR the DR can give you his true BMI to me he sounds healthy and normal

He is very muscular, maybe that's what is making it so low.

I would suggest talking to his doctor first.

BMI is bullsmurf in general. It doesn't take into account muscle mass or bone structure. It says I'm obese annnnnd I'm not evn close lol. Not a roll on me and I run about a mile to two a day. Hell even in high school when I ran 5 miles a day and was sickly thin it still said I was over weight. I'm short and fairly muscular.

His current doctor is a total idiot who I'm sure got his degree from a cracker jacks box   His favorite passtime is using google to diagnose. Anyway we're looking for a new one but don't have a doc we trust in the meantime.

well that does sound very similar

I agrer with the others, my super skinny 5 year old who only fits into skinny jeans with adjustable waistbands is overweight on the BMI scale. His pedi herself has told me "disregard that, he is obviously not overweight"

where are you from your DR sounds like DD previous one! haha yea shes got a new pedi now you can look in the phone book and call all the offices to make sure they take your insurance my nephew will be 6 next month he just hit 40lbs and hes pretty damn healthy he eats all the time but his dad was really small at that age too so its normal and safe for him
