Sick kid/kindergarten ? Vent

posted 22nd Mar
How sick does your kids need to get for you to keep them home? Also, do you always take them to the doctor? DD was never sick until she started school and now it seems like she's got something every other week. She's missed 12 days of school this year. She's had the flu, hand foot and mouth disease, croup and the stomach virus twice. She only went to the doctor once though when she had the hand, foot and mouth disease. The reason why is because we don't currently have insurence (DH is s temp, getting hired on full time April 1st.) the stomach virus we treated at home, the croup also didn't require a hospital visit and with the Flu, DS ended up way sicker than DD but with the same symptoms so we took him and it turned out he had the flu, we assumed since DD had the same symtoms that she also had it, I wasn't gonna pay $200 more dollars just for a conformation, we ended up treating that at home with over the counter meds too. Anyways, I kept her home this morning because she woke up with a fever of 102.6, a cough and sore throat and she could barely talk but when I called the school to tell them the lady told me we were going to get in trouble for truency and so many unexcused absences. I'm sorry but I don t think I should send her to school with a temp. But I can't afford to take her to the doctor for it either when they are just going to the tell me to treat it at home. This is so frustrating. Another thing that's annoying is that I try to send her when she's just a little sick and they sent her home once with a fever of 101.2 at 9:15am. Why send her if they're gonna send her home as soon as she gets there pretty much?

She is sick because of parents like you.....knowingly sending their sick child to school   Also, if she's been home all of her life she has like no immune system which is also making her prone to illnesses.

And it's ridiculous that you aren't taking that baby to the Dr. HF&M, yes that is viral but the croup isn't and now a sore throat? That might be strep. She needs to be seen. And yeah, with no Dr note all of these are unexcused absences. You need to figure something out in regards to medical care.

Right. She isn't allowed to be at school sick. Not even "a little sick".

Nope I don't always take her. And I don't keep her home for sinuses or anything. But if they're running a fever over 101 they should stay home (as per our Michigan licensing regulations). She's been out more this yr for dentist appts than anything. I don't think she's been home sick. But in prek she was. She had chicken pix and pneumonia that hospitalized her. So she missed a couple week for that. But this yr she hasn't been too bad. She had one ear infection but on a weekend so she didn't miss school. And we kept her out the day I had the baby so she could spend time with me.

If your kid is sick, especially with a temp, they should not go to school.
All the things you have outlined above are reasons to be home.

They also need to be fever free for 24 before going back

Umm, I sent her ONE TIME because the school was giving me smurf about it and they turned around and sent her home. I have called her doctor and discussed things every time she's been sick, it's not like I'm ignoring her. For smurfs sake, I treat it and she gets better. If she's extremely sick I'm absolutely going to take her in no matter what I have to pay but a sore throat could be as little as allergies and I'm not paying 200 for a doctor to do nothing. I gave her medicine and she is doing fine now but I didn't send her school just in case, if she had gotten worse I would've taking her to the doctor. I'm aware that they are unexcused with no dr. Note but I am not taking her to the doc. Every other week when I can give her fever reducer/pain reliever and let her rest. It's a waste of money and time.

Are u sending a note for her absent days??

my son has psyc and counseling appts, sometimes 2 times a month, if i dont send a drs. note they ring my ass, i basically just have the dr fax it to the school they can take me to court, if they like lol

my kids never had hfmd, but im pretty sure i would take them in for that, i take them in if i can't break the fever, that usually means they have an infection making it go up,

If she has a fever you should be keeping her home. I would never sen a child in with a fever. My son is in kindergarten too and I keep him if he's had a fever at all in the previous 24 hours or if he is just miserable, vomiting, or has diarrhea. I don't take him in for every little thing either, but for things like the flu or croup, they really need to be seen.

My son is actually home from school today because of a fever over night last night, I'm not taking him to the doctor.

ETA: today is his 14th absence, none of them excused by doctors, and the school has not given me any issues. He was home with me full time until he started kindergarten.

I agree that it is to some extent but to cover her attendance, it's not a waste of time.

Was she exposed to alot of kids before she started school. If not then her body has not built up immunity. Somethings you just can not avoid like hand, foot and mouth. She does need to see a doc for things, I understand the expense part. The schools are pretty serious about unexcused absences. If I as a parent found out another parent was sending their sick child to school I would be upset.

They are strict because too many parents let their kids stay home because the kid "doesn't feel like going" so the school has to play Mommy and require the parents to go to the doctor.

It can lead to a bacterial infection of the airways and yeah, breathing problems are a real issue here so a child should be seen for croup. My child would anyway.
