At what age did your kids learn to pronounce their L's and/or R's properly?

It's a typical problem until age 7. No speech therapist will refer based on that alone my 5yo still can't. Which really sucks when her name is lylian.

Thank you!

Someone was saying that my son should be able to say his L's by now and that it's an issue at this point. He's 4.5yrs old.

Sounds like he's about average with other kids though.

Nope he's absolutely fine. I get dds speech tested every year as a precaution because her dad has speech problems. They said be though it probably is the shape of her mouth causing her to not pronounce them right, they don't work on it until after 7. He'a got plenty of time. I work with 4 yo everyday and not all can pronounce them. If he had other speech issues they'd work on it but if that's all it is its not a big deal at all. Does he know those letter sounds? Like if you ask what does love start with could he tell you L? If so she. He says an l word see if he knows what it starts with. For example, he asks "how do you spell I love you? Then tell him to sound it out and see if he knows that sound is an L for love. This might not be until kindergarten that he does this though. But just if he can then try it. That's what the speech therapist did with lylian to see if she cognitively knew what she was saying and she did. Just her mouth wasn't pronouncing it right. If it was because of a cognitive issue then they may do speech. But if he's developmentally fine then there's no reason to worry.

Oh yeah, he knows the sound of the letter "L". He calls his grandmother "Lela" and he sounds out her name and gets the L's correct. He knows it. It's just a matter of actually pronouncing it properly. If he really focuses on it, sometimes he can get it right.
