Plugged ducts and Mastitis

posted 12th Jun
Ok so recently I have developed a big painful lump in my right breast and I am sure it's plugged milk ducts. My right breast has always produced a lot more milk than my left and I assume this is part of the problem. I have tried to nurse my son more on the side thats plugged to help it drain but he doesn't really like to eat on that side and it HURTS. I can just sit there and not touch my boob and it's painful. I'm really afraid of getting Mastitis but I don't know how I'm going to get this to clear up. I don't have time to sit around with a hot pack on my boob and getting plenty of rest is something that seems out of reach. Did anybody go through this and find a certain thing very effective for getting rid of it?

You have to rub it out. Atleast thats what I was told.

Try nursing with that breast as much as possible and rub on it while nursing.

I took antibiotics everytime I got it, but I know some people want to avoid the antibiotics.

I get it sometimes and nurse him using different positions and do the massage on it that it says here:

It hurts a TON but it works.

Warm compresses and pumping through it worked for me. I also up'd my water intake considerably.

i ended up in the hospital with mastitis two times then finaly had to give up breastfeading. For pluged ducts you need to rub it out, it might hurt alittle. If its mastitis it will be VERY painful, and red on one spot of your breast. If it gets really bad like i did you'll get a really high fever and may not be able to walk.

I ended up with mastitis 3 times within three months of my son being born. I took antibiotics 2 of the 3 times. I wound up very very sick with fevers and chills..... not fun. If it is a plugged duct, as everyone has already said, you need to really massage it out and nurse on that breast.... be sure you are completely emptying the breast.

How many times do you have to massage it and nurse on that side to get it out? Like how long does it usually take to go away? The lump is already red and really painful. I have started to massage it but how often should I do this?

If it is mastitis, you'll need to go get antibiotics (if you do, ask for the "butt shot" it works the quickest, along with oral antibiotics).
As for now, feed from that breast as often as possible. Holding a warm washcloth on the affected area while you bf may also help.
