Hand preference

posted 21st Mar
I posted this when Liv was about 10 or 11 months old and was told it was probably too early to tell and that I was nuts. lmao.

Well she's 2 now, and she's still uses her left hand for mostly everything... coloring, eating, etc. Is it safe to say she has a good chance at being a lefty?

Sounds like it. My DD is 3 and she still uses both hands, but hey that's okay I do too. I write with my right hand, but when it comes to sign language, and other tasks I used my left hand.

Lilly is only a year, but she uses her left hand most of the time. Grant did too, he's 4.5 now...but in OT they have been working on his right handedness for some reason (they have a legit reason, something about the way the brain develops with right handedness in autistic kids or some such) so he is getting better with his right.

My cousin was a lefty when she was a toddler. She got her hand smacked every time she tried using her left hand.. So I guess you could say she was forced to be a righty? Not quite sure of the reason of why it was such a big deal though.

Alyssa is 4 and she goes back and forth between her right and left hand.

Probably. But some kids that are ambidextrous don't figure out a preference til 5-6 depending on the strength of both.

My mom had this happen to her back in the 60's she went to a catholic school and the nun's made her only use her right hand. Said something about the devil and left hands lol

Oh, wow.

I don't think the devil thing would be the reason of why my cousin was forced into being right handed. My family has never been religious.

It honestly pisses me off to think about it. But, we're talking about something that happened around 20 years ago. I think the thing that angers me most is that to this day, I still don't understand why it wasn't ok for her to be left handed.

There's really no telling with my family. haha. I don't want to talk ill about my grandma considering she passed away a couple of years ago but, I seriously think she had something to do with it ? There is no telling why that woman did a lot of the things she has done.

I read a study a few months ago that said that children who were left handed were slower in learning to speak. Something about the part of the brain that controlled speech, also controlled the right hand. I found it really interesting.

I never put anything in the kid's hands, I hold it in front of them and let them reach for it and DD has always used left hand. We put her spoon in the right hand once to see how she would do and she split everything and she gets frustrate. She is 3 now safe to say she probably wont change
