I think I've changed my opinion on crazy names...

posted 21st Mar
I work for a preschool orginization and it dawned on me the other day that there are so many kids with made up names now that I don't think it's going to matter when they are adults what their names are. They will have grown up in a generation surrounded by these names, it will become normal. Back in the 80's someone named Brinley WOULD have stuck out like a sore thumb, but our kids generation won't bat an eye. I really think that we will be seeing doctors and lawyers and CEOs in the next 20 to 30 years named Keeli and Rayden and Skylee. I mean, we already have a president named Barack and a former SOS named Condaleezza. I think I'll stick with my old lady names but I no longer think that a different name is the big hindrance I thought it was, and it especially won't be when these kids grow up.

I know this won't change anybody's mind or anything, but I think we're just raging against the machine here.

Honestly, I'm still not crazy about the name Brinley. Maybe that's just me. I will still name my child something traditional like Emma or Brandon. Maybe I'm boring but that's just me.
And even though Barack and Condalezza aren't traditional English names, they are (I believe) traditional names in their originating countries. I know for sure that Barack is actually a pretty common name among Muslims and in Africa and the Middle East.

The name Condaleezza was made up by her parents, they got it from the music term "con dolcezza" which means "with sweetness"

Me and my husband were just talking about this.
I tried to give our daughter an "original" name but something that was normal so when she goes to preschool she wont get made fun of in school or that there wont be 3 girl in the class with her name. My husband was just saying the other night when we were discussing baby names for #2, that all the kids our daughter is likely to go to school with, might just make fun of HER for having such a normal, plain name.

My daughter is Alice, and Our boys names for next time are Oliver and James. I love old fashioned names too, personally.

Now, when I see people raging hard against weird names I can't help but wonder what will happen if their kid bring home a fiance/fiancee with a crazy name! Because crazy names have become common, and more and more they are coming from people who are otherwise smart and well-off (instead of the notion that someone named Arianica must have a mom who is low class and stupid). The wealthy and middle classes in America are starting to invent names. It used to be some teen parents would make up these crazy names, but I am seeing a lot of parents who are in their late 20s and have good degrees and good jobs coming up with some doozies! It's really changing.

Haha personally I could care less what anyone names their kid ya know? I just feel bad if they end up getting made fun of for their names because of their parents deciding on a silly name haha

Thats for sure! It is so hard for me to enroll new kids in school because I don't want to mispronounce names. Honestly, it will be interesting to see what new social norms develop from this. Maybe in 50 years kids will learn to write the phonetic spelling of their names right along with their names. Maybe "pronounciation" will end up on job applications! Weird to think about, but the world is changing. If you fight it too much you are going to end up being that crotchety old lady who "just doesn't understand kids these days" ;)

See, that's my point. I don't think this happens anymore. Nobody in these kids generations are going to get picked on for having a funny name because MOST of them have funny names. I would say that over 50% of my class comes up a red squiggly line when their names are typed into word.

Of course, this is barring calling your kid Booger or something that has easy negative connotations.
