i have eosinophilic esophagitis, aka EOE... it took me years to be diagnosed, but i had the swallowing problem since i was a kid.. i feel your pain.. i was once in the hospital for a week pregnant while pregnant with my son because the issue caused acid reflux problems and ulcers in my esophagus.. i take prevacid and liquid vicodin(not now because i am preggo) i eat so slowly and smaller meals... i also don't eat food that triggers the swallowing issues.. my esophagus gets very swollen, which area is the problem area for you? (mouth, throat or esophagus)

I'm glad somebody can relate. I feel crazy because my family doesn't understand.. They insist that it's anxiety. I was taking liquid Pepcid but the glass bottle fell and spilled so I'm screwed. I can't afford to replace it because I paid $900 in medical bills and medication this month.

I'm pretty sure it's my esophagus. When I went to immediate care on Sunday they diagnosed with me anorexia and told me to eat and drink more. Trust me I would if I could. When I drink anything, water, almond milk.. I take tiny sips and it stays in my mouth for like a minute because my doesn't do what it's suppose to do when it swallows. Once I finally get it down it feels like the water goes to my larynx, or gets stuck in the bottom of my esophagus. I constantly cough for hours after I eat or drink. I was able to really eat on Saturday, then Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I've been snacking on crackers and cottage cheese.

haha when i was a kid someone mentioned anorexia and i never told my family about my symptoms again, then around 16 they thought i had GERD and just put me on medication for acid reflux (didn't help) i had constant pain and would sometimes have my food stuck for hours in my esophagus. when i was pregnant i couldn't eat for a week and they had to give me a PICC line in my arm to feed me (it sucked) then just last year they found out i had EOE ( biopsy showed a lot of eonophiles in my esophagus (after 3 EGD's [only one biopsy], leading to my diagnosis) my family felt pretty bad about it (my dad at least because i had told him about my symptoms since i was 16 but he never believed me that it was more)

trust me its frustrating , and we spent a lot of money on medicine that didn't work and doctors visits - i went 3 times that week while preggo to the ER and they said:
i pulled my back (because i had a stabbing pain in my back and chest)
i have acid reflux from the pregnancy bad
& that it was in my head

keep searching for answers, i went to 3 different GI specialist before they could figure it out!

oh and i found out that if i eat before i work out i get pain again (maybe it causes my food to come up more, idk)
i would just listen to your body and demand answers and tests
have you had a EGD done yet?

What is an EGD? My doctor said id need to see an ENT for a scope. I have an appointment set up with both an ENT and GI. When I was in immediate care over the weekend the doctor wanted to do an xray but I told her that I'm pregnant. No real testing has been done. My primary care doctor just gave me reflux meds and to go to immediate care when I need an IV.

My dad just come over to pick up my daughter. He asked if I'm bulimic because I went to the bathroom after I ate dinner at his house on Saturday. I never threw up.. I haven't had food or anything to drink in days, once I ate it upset my stomach and I had to go #2. I also had an IV antibiotic that day.

I hope I get tested and something will be done soon. Honestly at this point I'd love a PICC line or to be hospitalized because I can't keep driving an hour to immediate care. I hate not being able to drink, my mouth is so dry.

well, an EGD is a esophagogastroduodenscopy (its the scope they put down into your throat- to your stomach to check everything, and the valves.)
you can ask for a biopsy also. thats the only way they found what i had (and they can do it while pregnant) they put you in a twilight sleep.. hope you get one soon

i had to go three days in a row of not eating or drinking anything and having tons of pain before they actually admitted me, then it was another week almost that they believed me that it was something more then a pulled muscle or over reacting... i swear i was in such pain that i was on morphine (pregnant !) and they still took a week, the GI saw my esophagus and ordered the PICC line because it was all bloody ulcers in there... he knew i couldn't eat and i had lost 10 lbs in less than a week at the hospital...you're ob needs to take it more seriously and demand the hospital to test for things right away.

I'm getting it done at 5:45 tonight. They said they might do a biopsy. I don't know if you're in the October group on Facebook but I posted last night that I'm hospitalized. The er doctor didn't feel comfortable sending me home without seeing the GI. I had a swallow evaluation done today too. The lady who did the test thinks its gerd and I might be asperating because I cough after I drink.

How bad is the EGD? Was your throat itchy after? I'm slightly nervous

it was not bad, my throat hurt a bit after the biopsy was done..but nothing to bad, i have GERD too but usually its more than that if your having such bad difficulties, i am in the group but i must of missed that post! Good luck girl, dont worry about it, thank goodness you are getting some help!

I'm feeling a little better today. My throat hurts a little and my chest does because of the GERD. They ended up finding a hiatal hernia. They also did a biopsy to see if I have eoe.
