does having a curved spine (labor)

posted 21st Mar
make it harder to get a spinal or whatever they are called? I am going to go in planning on a natural birth like my last 4 pregnancies but recently (the past year) i found out my spine is curved. I wondered how does that play into getting a spinal if a csection is needed? i have never had an epidural before either.

Nope. I have an S curve and I havent had a single issue during both of my labors. I went natural, pain med free......however they did look at my spine and say I was fine for the epidural if I wanted it.

They won't give you one if it's bad.

Oh I forgot to add.......I have a pretty decent curve, its not noticeable since it pretty much balences each other out. My spine was pretty straight when I bent over for them to check and see if I could get the epidural. The lady told me that did them, that she actually has it too and its pretty common for it to straighten out, but usually goes back to the way it was once you give birth.

weird....but either way thats what she told me

okay i was just curious because i have read somewhere that it makes giving the epidural almost impossible or something and that if attempted it could cause back problems. BUT that person may have no clue what they are talking about. i dont want an epidural at all (like i said i did natural with my last four) but csections happen...

Well they would HAVE to do something.....pretty sure they arent going to just slice you open with no medication! lol You will be fine!

i know they would have to do something but i was wondernig if they would have to put me under or something instead beacuse of it. i dont know anything about this stuff. i only did some research about epidurals and spinals in the past because i was deadset on natural birth lol. which is whyt he idea of a csection TERRIFIES me.

Depends on the shape and severity of the curve. I have scoliosis and lordosis. My spine does the "s" curve and also curves in towards my stomach. I wouldn't not have been able to get one.

Honestly, if you've went this long in your life before finding out, you are probably fine, especially if the pain is not focused on your hips/lower back area. I've been in treatment for it since I was 4.

actually i have dealt with a lot of back and hip pain all my life. but because i dindt have health insurnace half of my life i just dealt with it. as i got older i put the blame on pregnancy, being a mom, being top heavy (G cup here) so i really just ignored it until it got so bad a year and half ago that moving any direction gave me a severe pain no matter what. right now im not hurting terribly but being pregnant my back aches most of the day.

Can you feel your lower spine? Like start at your butt crack and work your way up - can you feel the actual bone a fair way up (like not quite to your ribs, but about halfway between ribs and butt) you should be fine to get it.

I have scoliosis, and have harrington rods down my entire spine. they did an ultrasound to find out if they would be able to give me an epidural. it was possible( I didn't want one, so I didn't get one), but the concern was that the epidural might not spread properly due to the rods. if you are conserned make an appointment with your hostipals anesthesiologist.
