Smoking in the car.
posted 20th Mar
A law was passed in my state today that you CANNOT SMOKE IN A CAR WITH CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 8. I think it was long overdue. Can't even explain how much it urks me to see someone smoking with kids in the car.
Well, someone on my FB (rather not say the relation) has 3 kids, ages 6 and under, and she is PISSED about this law. Saying "oh our goverment is wasting time and money on this law, as long as my window is down I pay for the car I'll do what I want". Yea.
SO smokes, but does not do it in our house or in our car, whether DD and I are in it or not. He's actually learned to change his clothes and brush his teeth if he has a smoke, because I quit back when I found out I was pregnant and the smell bothers me, plus not wanting it around DD.
Anyways, opinions?

When I did smoke, I didn't have kids, but I did babysit.
I did smoke in my car, but never when the kids were in my car.
My mom smokes, has for a long time. She never smoked in the house, and only occasionally smoked with us in the car. She still doesn't smoke in the house, and if she is watching Heathen and they have to go somewhere, she will not smoke with her in the car.

I think it's great and I wish more states took a proactive approach to second hand smoke and how it affects people, especially children.

Anyone who gets mad about that is a complete moron and doesnt deserve children.

Its not your kid so not your concern. They tried to pass a law like that here but it didn't pass because its crazy. This is America, its supposed to be a free country. And now you can't even smoke in your own car with your kid in it. Its just crazy the things they pass.

No I don't smoke in the car, or home, I find it disgusting, I see it ALL the time around here, so sad.
When I first met SO (6yrs ago) he didn't see a problem with doing so, since having both our kids I've actually changed his mind about smoking in the car and house, lol.
I really wish we had this law here, I know someone was trying to push for it, but I don't know what's going to happen.

I am thankful for the law! Arkansas got it a few years back but I think it was under 6 not 8. It stopped my mom from smoking while me and my daughter were in her car when she had to drive us places when I was younger. I always hated being in the car with the smoke. it irritated me bad and my lil brother had trouble breathing so i would never want to put my child through that hell. a CRACKED window does NOT let the damn smoke out well enough at all.

I heard about this law a while ago, it just now got passed? Anyway, I love it. I would never put my child in a situation where I could potentially be harming him. Even if the windows are down, it doesn't all go out the window. Don't risk your child's health because you have a bad habit. Just my opinion

Who cares about the kids health, right.

I do not agree with the law. The majority of people who would smoke in the car with their kids probably also smoke in their house with their kids. I think it is completely unlawful to ban smoking in your home, whether there are kids present or not. And so since I believe in freedoms, whether I agree with the parents decision or not, I think it is UNLAWFUL to ban smoking in your car with children present.
Also what the smurf does 8 years old have to do with it?

Do I agree with smoking in a car with children? Absolutely not.
That being said, I don't think the government should be telling people whether they can or can't smoke In their own cars. It think the government is over stepping in this instance.

Why does it only protect kids up to the age of 8? I agree with the law. Yea it's a free country but we aren't free to rob or murder others. They've already proven how harmful second hand smoke is, so i dont get the whole its a free country argument. In my opinion smoking in the car with your kids is very dangerous. And I am a smoker.

That law passed a few years ago in maine but its kids under 16. I thi.k it is great. I am a smoker but refuse to smoke around kids let alone in a small area like a car.

I keep my nasty habit to myself. I will never smoke in my house or in a car with kids. Ever.

Great law!! I think the age should be higher than 8 though.
