Gender neutral, less at shower?

posted 20th Mar
I keep hearing that if I choose not to disclose the sex of my baby, I may get less atr my showers. Do you think this is true? I don't want gendered things, even clothes, even after the baby is born. I am nervous.

Well, yeah. For one, there aren't a lot of gender neutral choices. Even going green and yellow, there tend to be ruffles or gender references made. Secondly, it's a lot easier for people to get excited when they know. The more excited they are, the more baby gets!

My family is very careful about baby gifts. I didn't get much of anything until after dd was born and had come home from nicu. I always just get something for mommy to be for the shower. If we're close I send flowers when she's in the hospital and a gift once baby comes home. Maybe just register for gender neutral things. That's what I did.

This. Finding gender neutral things is next to impossible. We've had to do it recently because our doctor now thinks this may be a girl and its been a nightmare trying to find neutral clothes or anything in general.

I would think so. There isn't much neutral colored things and i think most believe that when you find out the sex, you'll just go buy blue or pink or whatever colored smurf anyways. I bought neutral things and then when i found out i was having a girl, DD never even wore the neutral stuff.
Most people like to shop for girl or boy things and don't like to have to go and find things that could be for both. I feel like it just makes smurf more difficult so instead they go for easy things like toys, bath stuff, diapers etc and useless smurf you can't even really use.

We weren't going to find out what this baby is, but if we wanted even a few days worth of outfits, being suprised wasn't an option! The options are nearly non existant.

Does it really matter what you "get" at your shower? I mean really. The shower is a celebration. It isn't about gifts. It is a traditional celebration welcoming you to motherhood. Don't worry about your gifts.

My friend had a surprise baby and did up an online registry which included things like a breast pump, swing, sippy cups, bottles, books and neutral sheets and towels.

She got all of it. Plus when baby was born she was completely spoilt by boy gifts from her family.

Probably. I didn't have a shower. But I had a little get together after she was born and got TONS of stuff. I'm glad too because the ultrasound said boy and I bought so much boy smurf, i had to exchange it all lol.

You aren't looking in the right places. I found several gender neutral outfits when I was pregnant with my twins. You just have to get out of your head that certain colors are for boys or girls. Newborn sleep sacks are the best!!!

You can also do a onsie decorating event at the shower. how often do you really dress your newborn anyway? Not much unless you are leaving the house. Otherwise it is nothing but onsies and being swaddled. They are always spitting up on themselves and having blow outs. There is plenty of time to go purchase cute baby clothes that are gender specific after baby is here. Plus, newborn stage is short lived. Then you can buy for 3months and up.

I probably should have thought of this but eh, first time mother. I didn't know jack smurf lol.
My DD was in newborn clothes for a long time though so thankfully i got a good use out of all that newborn stuff i bought. I know a lot of people though that their LO never even wore NB but they already took all the tags off so they were stuck with them. I bought a lot of thrift store NB stuff so either way, i was okay and didn't waste tons of money.

My best friend got a lot at her shower and she didn't find out the sex since her husband was deployed. I got her some towels and outfits if I remember correctly. But keeping it as gender neutral as can be AFTER the shower with all the gear and big items and clothes.... that's going to be hard to do.

My twins weren't in newborn long. That suprised me. One was in preemie for about 2 weeks. Then she went newborn. They were both in 3-month clothes by about 2 1/2 months old. It goes really fast! My son was in newborn for a short time as well.

I have always found that at gender neutral showers you get less clothes, but more from your registry. I got a TON of clothes after I had DS.
