Smoking

posted 19th Mar
I am wondering how you all feel about people smoking around your kids. I personally wont let anyone smoke around my kids in fact, when someone is standing right outside the door and blowing it in my kids faces, or standing outside our car and its coming in, ill ask them to please move. But i ran across an issue. My in laws all smoke and around their kids. They were pretty good about it when we went to the family party...noone lit up in the house. I think someone tried and someone else said to step outside. My mil and her dude arent very careful though...they will smoke outside right next to my babies and not turn to blow it away so i have to move them. They will also put their cig out and then immediately hop into the car...bringing a bunch of smoke with them. So i guess what im wondering is...how do you all feel about people smoking around your kids? AND How do you go about asking people to stop when you dont want to be rude but dont want them smoking near your kids.

sry if i typed badly and thanks in advance for any responses!

I think it's freaking rude and disrespectful. Secondhand smoke is dangerous, too. Show some consideration.

I do not allow people to smoke around my child. If I am in an outdoor situation and I feel that someone is too close and smoking, I will usually just move. When it comes to my inlaws, I expect my DH to talk with them about not smoking around the baby and it seems to help. We do not visit their home often becuase it smells so strongly of smoke even though they do not smoke inside while we are there. I hate when my son smells like smoke, I always give him a bath after we visit so he is clean again. Lucky for him, he loves baths!

I think it is disgusting and should be illegal to smoke while your child is present. Like seriously introducing them to all of the lung problems of a smoker at such a young age is sick and wrong. I used to smoke and never smoked anywhere near my child or any other children.

I think it is nasty. It smells disgusting. I will bring my kids somewhere else if they cannot be considerate of them!

And I am not judging at all because I smoke. Well - I did before I was pregnant.

I don't let people smoke around my kids. My in laws used to smoke and df used to let them know when we were coming so they wouldn't smoke in the house. He made sure that they knew we didn't allow that smurf, and if they ever tried we just wouldn't come to visit.

I smoke but never around my son, I also stay outside for a few after to make sure I air myself out lol. I never let him around smoke of any kind. I ask nicely and explain it at first but I have one friend(we don't talk anymore now) who I had to get nasty with. When I asked her to not smoke around DS she just laughed at me and told me I was paranoid. It was my house too!
I'm usually nice about it unles they push me.

I made it clear to my in-laws that it would be unacceptable to smoke around my kids. They don't like me much because of it, and I don't really care. My kids health is way more important to me than them liking me.

I smoke, and I still have never let anyone smoke near my child. We move away if a stranger lights uo in public, and all of my family already knows i find that unacceptable and they respect it.

My parents are very heavy smokers. They both smoke around my kids when we visit them. Which is one of the reasons we never go to see them. When SO's father stayed with us we asked him not to smoke inside or in the vehicle and he didn't.

If you have an issue with someone smoking, and it isn't your house/property then just simply move your kids away. No need to say anything, unless the ask you something. My dad smokes and I have made it clear that I don't want him smoking in his face. He tries his best not to smoke in the car with DS, and he always smokes outside (always has, so no issue there). But other than that, I just don't leave DS around people smoking.

I flat out tell them to move away. I smoke and am VERY conscious of whether any of it is going to get around my son. Typically, if we're going outside..I'll step out and smoke first...then let him come out.

When I come in from smoking I always wash my hands and sometimes even change my shirt because I only smoke a few a day.

Stand up for your kid's health--don't give a smurf about what people think. It's ridiculous to get aggravated about someone not wanting that around their kids. I'll never understand how people can smoke in their house, let alone when kids are in it.

I like reading all your replies... I don't feel bad ever asking people to move or moving ourselves... Which I have to with the in laws cause there'sno wway ill let my kids inhale it... But I was worried I'd offend people (even though I'll never syop) so it'd nice to hear from people especially the ones who smoke that it doesn't offend them. Some I know it does and that's just too bad I guess. But I'm glad to hear that you all handle it the same way. I saw a happy little boy the other day hop into his dad's truck and I smiled... Until I saw his dad get in and light up a cig. I wanted to strangle him.

Sry for my typing my phone is wonky

I don't try to be polite about it.. It is my child's health.. Don't smoke near them or don't come near them, period. And this is coming from a smoker.. Well I don't pregnant and am hoping I don't go back.. But it's disgusting when you are not the smoker
