Cancelled car insurance

So, my insurance agent I've had for the last 2 years retired. I got a new agent a few months ago, but just called today cause I knew it was getting close to renew my policy.

He informed me that apparently my payments weren't ever sent in, and my policy was cancelled in August. So I've been driving around for the last 7 MONTHS without freaking insurance! No one notified me or nothing. He called DMV and there weren't any suspensions on my license or anything, so we renewed my policy.

But..


He said it'll probably eventually catch up with the DMV and they'll do one one two things: either make me pay $8 a day since August or make me turn in my plates for 7 months. Wtf! Has anyone ever had to deal with smurf like this? Did DMV actually make you follow through with that smurf?

How did you not know? Like didn't you think it was weird you weren't paying?

How did you not know you did not pay it? Is it direct withdrawal?

How did you not know you missed 7 months of payments?

I paid for the year ahead of time. So idk what the hell happened and that office has no clue either since that agent no longer works there. So basically I'm SOL out of the money I gave her .

If it were me, I'd go to the DMV and ask them. $8 a day at 7 months is about $1700. I mean, I'd rather pay the $1700 and not have the suspension possibly catch up with me, but that's just me. I don't know how much a suspended license would cost, but I'd still rather have it show that I always had insurance.
Just wondering, how did you not know the payments weren't coming out? We pay $235 a month for a new Mazda CX-7 and a 2006 BMW Z4 and $144 for a 2013 Harley V-Rod Nightrod. I would totally notice if that didn't come out, but our payments are auto-drafted on the same date every month so we always know when it's coming out.

Did you pay by check or credit/debit? That happened to us before; We called ourcredit union & they sent us the Transcript of the check that was cashed by the insurance company as proof to show that we did indeed pay.

Whether the agent is there or not, there should be a record in your file. Do you have a receipt? Go back in your bank acct and find the amount? There's got to be something. That's bs.
Also, I've gone for a few months without insurance and it never "caught up with me", thank goodness. Don't know how it would, you're insured now and it's not like you tried to file any claims while you weren't.

Who is the insurance through? They have to refund you for the months you were without insurance.

If you paid for the year in advance, they should have that on file. If you paid from a checking account, you'll have record of it as well. I would NOT pay them a cent until they can tell you where the money you paid went.

The DMV won't charge you. SIL doesn't have insurance and they have never charge her. I would ask for my money back smurf that smurf you paid for a full yr.

How do you not know you aren't paying insurance for 7 months? Don't you balance your account?

This, you have to have a receipt from your old agent. I mean sounds like maybe she pocketed that money.
