If something horrible happened to you...

posted 18th Mar
and say you are the type of person who tries to suppress horrible memories of things so that they don't bother you & normally you would consider yourself "over" that horrible thing that happened to you. Then say someone talks about something similar that happened to them & then it just brings up those memories again & your heart starts to race and you pretty much feel panicked when you think about it...would that mean you aren't over it fully or is that just a normal response to have??

It's called a trauma trigger. You are in trauma and need to get counseling.

I would think you aren't over it. Generally suppressing a memory doesn't help you to get over it, just to not think about it.

It happens to me and I consider it normal

Oh :\ Well I mean I go every day fine & rarely ever think about those things but sometimes when I read things on here it reminds me of it.

I don't know if you can really ever fully get over a memory, if you just tuck it away then you just don't think about it, you haven't actually dealt with it which could cause more harm than good IMO.

I mean I think I have dealt with it...idk I am not sure though...I have forgiven the person who did it to me but I just never forgot what was done.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it called PTSD to still suffer like that when certain triggers happen?

If your heart starts to race and you feel panicked then you are definitely experiencing a trauma trigger. Until you cope with the trauma (not just closing the door and trying to forget) the door will open back up every time you have a trigger. It's not normal and it doesn't have to be like that.

It happens to me sometimes but each time gets better and better, I figure that means I'm not over it but time is starting to dilute the panic response

I do the same thing. And have had counseling and dealt with those things. But the heart racing and the pain come and go in like less than a minute. It is like a gasp of breath for me then I am over it again.

I guess it could be...I never really thought of it like that.

Have you ever thought that maybe you might have PTSD? If you could i'd at least go talk to someone at least once(if possible) to kind of get an idea of things to do to help you cope when you have those episodes (lack of better words).
