Not going through with IUI

posted 18th Mar
Well I my husband and I went in today for our day 12 sonogram to set up IUI. I had follicles at 18, 17.4, 16.5 and 15.4 mm. The doctor was very concerned that with my age all 4 of the follicles would fertilize and we would have a quad pregnancy if we went through with IUI. He also suggested we abstain or use condoms for the next week. I'm having a really hard time with the idea of intentionally not getting pregnant after 2 years of trying. I don't want a quad pregnancy and I know the risks but how to I shoot down my small chance of getting pregnant without IUI? With my husbands low-end-of-normal count, and me never being pregnant, I have a hard time believing we'd end up pregnant with 4, but it is very risky. So anyways, just really disappointed from the bittersweet news. Glad I ovulate well but we already knew that. Better luck next time I guess.

We are thinking about it. It just doesn't feel right not to! I don't want 4 but if we got them, we don't get anything we can't handle, right? We are still discussing it when DH gets home from work but I went in with this strong feeling of content and joy, I can't ignore that!

Do you understand why the Dr told her to abstain and to be cautious?

Patience momma. I have walked your journey. I feel your pain and completely understand the frustration. The good news is that you know that the outcome is favorable for you to become pregnant. Now to adjust the program a tad so that you don't end up with a high risk and potentially disastrous pregnancy. The idea is to have a healthy pregnancy yielding a healthy baby. Nobody wants micro preemies or preemies at all. The potential problems for them and their health is very high as is for your health to carry that many babies at once.

That's what makes this a difficult decision. I'm more than willing to wait for a healthy baby but it just feels wrong to not try. With DH's slighly low count I'm very conflicted. I need more information, so it's off to the internet I go!

Did you doctor tell you the statistics of all of them being implanted? My cousin had sorta the same results, but she only ended up with 2..

Because she could have multiple children? After TTC for 2 years... and spending lots of $

No, he didn't say much at all. I'd never met him before, I'm not certain he knows our details. That's exactly what I want to know! Clearly it's possible, but i've never gotten pregnant on my own, ovulating regularly, with one egg fertilizing. So I'm wondering how much of a possibility quads is.

Just do it! If your pregnancy really for whatever reason resulted in some crazy amount of babies that was unsafe they can do selective termination. Sorry, but when you have been trying that long and investing that time and energy I WOULD DO IT.

TBH I would get to BD. Even if by some chance all 4 were fertilized, the chance of all 4 successfully implanting is even slimmer. If you aren't willing to take a chance on getting twins I would abstain. But honestly I think having a quad pregnancy is a long shot especially with a low sperm count.

It just sucks cause I don't want you to miss your chance and I don't want you to get hurt at the same time.

I would be really scared of even the possibility of 4 at once. That kind of a high risk pregnancy and then preemies or micro preemies, the terrifying thought that you could lose one or all of them. I would just wait and try again a little later. I'd much rather have a relaxing pregnancy and a healthy baby at birth that can go home with you.
