Serious fall? or Minor head bump?

posted 17th Mar
My 19 month old climbed onto his highchair from the kitchen table tonight & fell off. I had told him "no don't do that" multiple times. I walked just a few feet away to where I was just out of reach to catch him from falling. He landed with the back of his head hitting the ground first   he kicked & wiglgled while he breathed in to let out a huge scream, I could tell it hurt him really bad. I cried myself cause it scared me so much, I am so worried he hurt his little head.
I would say it was about a 3 foot fall & his head hitting the ground was so loud. He cried for a good 3 minutes & almost puked but I was able to calm him down & so far there is no mark or bump on his head, just some redness.
I can't fall asleep cause I'm so worried he gave himself a concussion, after he stopped crying he started to act very sleepy but today is also the first day we decided to not give him a nap because he's been having bad sleep schedules so I don't know if all the crying made him realize he was tired or if his sleepiness right after the fall means something serious.
I am very worried fellow mommies   I just went & checked up on him in his crib & he's cuddled up sleeping. I know if you have concussion your not suppose to go to sleep afterwards (some say it's an old wives tale) but thinking about it possibly being true makes me so worried!

How else was he acting besides sleepy? I'm sure it hurt pretty bad, but more than likely scared him more than anything. Just keep an eye on him, I'm sure you already are. Hope he's okay!! (Bet he doesn't climb on the high chair again...)

You keep them awake so you can tell if they're losing consciousness or not. It's easier to look for signs. Not a wives tale.

Crying right away is usually a good sign. The acting sleepy and almost throwing up would make me nervous because they are both signs of concussion. With that said, throwing up can also just be a reaction to extreme pain.

Watch him closely. If ANYTHING seems off. Take him to the pedi.

does he move a little when you touch him or move his blanket? i was told when my daughter dived off the couch like superman and hit her head really hard that when she did fall asleep to check on her every few hours (i think don't quote me on it) for the first 6hrs. and move something or touch her hand. basically anything that would make her move a little in her sleep under a normal situation and if she moved that she was ok but to keep an eye on her. good luck momma and hope he doesn't have too bad of a headache in the morning.

I hope he learned his lesson after that fall! He acted a little out of it for a few seconds once he stopped crying, like leaning his head back & looking at the ceiling but he is always goofy like that, it just seemed odd cause he wasn't saying anything while he did it. I also thought he looked a little pale.
But about 15 minutes after the fall we sat down for dinner & he ate a bunch like usual, the rest of the night he acted like his usual energetic chatty self. The first few minutes after the fall were the only times I noticed the odd behavior, sleepiness, & quietness.

I'd think that would be a good sign. But either way, I'd be nervous too and def keep a close eye on him. Him having a headache from the fall could cause the quietness, that's how my son acts when he gets headaches, but he's never fallen and hit his head that I'm aware of. But hope he's okay!! Keep us updated.

I think the old wives tale is that you'll go into a coma if you fall asleep after a concussion, that's I meant should have specified. But yeah he was up for about 3 hours after the fall & went back to normal behaviour. He didn't actually puke but a little came up in his mouth whe he was crying, if I wouldn't have gotten him to calm down he prob would have puked though.

I'm going to go check on him & see if he moves, if he doesn't what does that mean?

Keeping someone with a concussion awake used to be common practice for observation, nowadays though it's considered unnecessary. The part that says they'll fall into a coma is an old wives tale. If he hasn't had a nap today and threw a huge fit after hitting his head, he's probably just worn out. That said, I would just watch him. If he starts acting confused, dizzy, starts vomiting, spikes a fever, or seems like he has a severe headache then I'd take him in. Otherwise, if he's acting normal I wouldn't worry too much.

you can check for a concussion by shining a lit in his eyes if they both dialate normaly then he doesnt have a concussion

I just went and checked on him and he has moved from the spot he was when I last checked on him & flinched when I touched his back so I think hopefully that is a good sign. I think the loudness of the fall is what scared me & him for that matter, the most. Thanks ladies I think I can head off to bed worry free now, if I keep staying up checking on him he's gonna wake up & really not be happy with me lol
