Non-religious moms

posted 17th Mar
My sons daycare is supposed to be non-religious. But his teacher has been teaching them little prayer songs and he has been coming home singing them. He is 3 and while we are happy to answer any religion questions he has, we don't like it being taught to him by someone other than us. I love his daycare other than this one issue... I want to bring it up with the director and ask that they stop teaching my son to pray. I don't really know how to bring this up without causing tension... I do love the teachers and he learns so much... But this has become unacceptable. How would you Mommas handle this? We specifically avoided religious daycare a for a reason... Then all of a sudden my son is coming home singing prayers... Advice?

I would do exactly what you just said. Tell them that you do appreciate them trying to teach him things but that you would rather him be learning something else while the other kids are learning prayers. Just say you want to teach him when you feel he is old enough or if he asks and don't want it taught anywhere else first.

What are the songs? Are they actually about Jesus/God or are they just little life lessons eg. don't lie, don't steal, be good to your neighbor, etc.?

Just be honest. Talk to the director and say I have some concerns regarding these songs that my son is being taught. What can we do about this.

Id say something. Im not religious at all but my MIL is and it bothers me when she pushes it on me. If you chose a non religious day care then they shouldnt be teaching anything religious.

Honestly who cares. Its a song so what if its a prayer. I'm not religious and I have 3 kids one of which goes to a Catholic church one goes to a Christian church and my youngest hasn't been yet but will soon enough.

I honestly couldn't careless IMO. But if it bugs you then tell them it does.

Yikes I'd be livid.

I'd calming tell them you're uncomfortable with the subject matter he is learning and don't want him to participate in songs of that nature.

I would just calmly explain to them, that you don't feel comfortable with his teacher teaching him these sort of things since you are non religious.

They are specific prayers. God, Jesus, let us thank our lord, praise our lord, those type of things. No sort of lessons involved.

I would tell them that, though I love them teaching him songs, they need to be non-religious songs. It is kind of a deal breaker for me.

If they were just little life lesson songs, I'd probably let it go by. But talking about God/Jesus/praying...no. Just no.

I would outright go in and tell them that unless they are considered a religious day care, which they aren't then they need to refrain from teaching my child religious materials. I find that really inappropriate that they are doing that when it isn't a religious day care since there is probably not only non religious familys who send their children there but also families that are a minority religion or culture that have very different beliefs.

I'd be pissed off.

I'd be calm and talk to them about it.

I'd be upset if it is supposed to be non-religious & definitely say something.

Yeah, that's definitely not their place if they aren't supposed to be directly a religious preschool. Talk with the director and ask for it to stop, teach him other songs instead.

There are plenty of songs out there that don't involve religion, they have plenty others to choose from.
