have them all pick some toys if they are old enough to give to some sick kids or unfortunate ones teaches them a life lesson too

I get rid of things they haven't used, broken or have pieces missing. Then after that i go through and they watch me throw toys into a box and if they want it they say stop and dig it back out. When i clean out the toys i allow them to have 2 bucket each, no more.

I pick out anything broken or worn out first.
Next, cheap crap like party favor toys or dollar store toys go.

Next, anything cheap like McDonalds (or similar FF) toys go.
Then I narrow down the categories of toys. My son has cars, trains, Legos, and figurines. If anything falls out of those 4 categories (and wasn't a recent gift or super expensive), then it goes.

And for the toys that he does keep, I get stuff to organize it. All of his cars go in a holder. His trains are in bins. His Legos have Lego boxes shaped like Legos. Stuff like that. It helps with the clutter and the organization and clean up.

If they play with all of them and they aren't broken and still in decent condition I wouldn't throw any out.
