So I've been catching a LOT of grief about how Emerson is a girls name and if I name my son that, he will get made fun of and be called 'Emmy' and will have self esteem problems (from my SO's step moms mouth)

We had recently decided on Emerson but now I am really second guessing it, because if Emerson becomes more and more popular as a girl name, such as Madison,, he actually may feel out of place if he meets lots of girl Emerson's and he is the only boy.. What do you think? Should I just let this name go to the girls and think of something else or hold my ground and give my son an orginally boy name.

It sounds masculine to me.

The ending of -son is masculine in every name except Alison.

I don't see Emerson as a girl's name at all. I also think the trend of giving girl's boy names is kind of stupid too. If you really love the name, use it. I personally love the name Emerson.

Typically if it ends in son, it's masculine.

Personally I like it for a girl spelt Emersyn or something like that. I find Emerson as a boys spelling

The only Emerson I know is a girl. But I think it's technically a 'boys' name.

The only Emerson I know is a boy. I've never met a girl named Emerson. And if there is a girl in his class named Emerson which I highly doubt just teach him to let comments roll off his back if they're said.

I'm going to go with boy judging by the 'son' at the end. I've always considered it a boy name, never seen it on a girl and just because women start using it for girls doesn't mean it will be less of a masculine name.

The only Emerson I have ever met has been the little girl I babysit & yes her friends call her Emmy.

I've never heard of a girl being named Emerson. So strange, and not something I'd ever use on a girl.

The little girl I know goes by Emmy, also.

To me that sounds like a boys name, not a girls. I knew an Emerson and he was a guy. I never thought of that name as feminine at all
