Dressing Themselves...

posted 16th Mar
How old is your toddler and what can they do as far as dressing/undressing themselves? Just wanting to see if my stepson is on track or if we're pushing him too hard....

My 3 year old (not sure if she counts as "toddler" anymore though   ) can do almost anything except put shoes on. Sometimes she still puts clothes on backwards, but other than that doesn't struggle.
Though most of the time she still tries to convince me to do it. But that's just because she's kind of lazy.

My 15 month old (will be 16 months on 22nd) can put pants on, take them off, take her shirt off, almost put a shirt on with help (if you put it on her head she puts her arms through) & can almost put socks on

No. She can do snaps but not buttons on pants. She can undue buttons though.

Idk how old he is, but my DD1 has been able to take all her clothes off for a while (she's 4 years and 2 months), and can put her panties and pants on, but I still do her socks and get her shirt over her head, lol.
DS is 2 years and 4 months, he doesn't do anything, lol. But we haven't really tried to make him put clothes on yet, either.

Impressive! My stepson will be 3 in June and still acts like he can't do anything himself. He'll take pants off, but not a shirt. And I KNOW he can do it because his pajama shirts will be on the floor in the mornings, but if I ask him to do it, he acts like he can't, tries for 2 seconds, and then asks for help. He will put pants on with a lot of verbal instruction and putting 2 legs in one hole about 10 times first. Won't put a shirt on. Won't put a coat on. Won't put his hat on. Can put boots on with instruction, but not shoes (possibly because they are a little tighter). It's just very frustrating. We've been refusing to help him lately, and actually punishing him (time-outs) for not doing it and refusing to even try. I think it might be because his mom babies him sooo bad.

I don't think it's anything to worry over. I mean, I'm 20 & so far haven't met anyone that's made it this far in life that can't dress themselves   what we did was always tell her what we were doing like, "put your foot in this hole & the other foot in this one. Then stand up & pull them up!" When we put her pants on. We started around 10 months & showed her how. She's pretty independent really. I think bc she has a little brother. She's grown up a lot in the last 4 months. She picks her toys up when asked, throws trash away & cleans up her sippy if she spills it   just keep trying to work with him on it & he will get it
