How do i know?

posted 15th Mar
How do I know when my son is done eating? He's 4 months. I started him on bananas last week and tonight I started him on sweet potatoes. He loves it. He's kicking, laughing, and smiling but I don't want to over feed him. Should he eat the whole thing or half or are there any indicators that he is done? Right now he's gone through half of it and is still eating.

Usually first indicator is when they start playing with the spoon with their tongue, or spitting the food back out.

That's the problem with early solids. Unless they refuse it. That's why it's more developmentally appropriate to let them feed themselves because then they'll eat what they are ready for.

My kid would only eat 2 or 3 peas if I let him feed himself...lol

My son was a late eater but would overeat and get sick. My son is a big boy and seemed to stop getting full of the milk alone so I was told I could start solids.

You just feed them more formula/breastmilk then. At 4 months old there is a still very high chance than his digestive tract is not ready and could potentially cause issues (allergies, obesity, ect) later in life.

You should give solids after their liquid food. At this age their nutrients still need to come from formula or breast milk, food should just be for sensory input and perhaps food allergy reduction.

He'll refuse to eat when he's full.

Good idea thank u. I was only feeding him once or twice a day but Id usually give the food first then the formula. I'll do it the other way around now.

When you're introducing solids you are supposed to feed them the baby food before you give them breast milk or formula... OP- As you add foods, the amount of breast milk or formula you're using should decrease....

Your joking right. Breastmilk/formula should always be offered first and solids are in addition to that not to replace.
