52 weeks paid maternity leave in Canada?

posted 15th Mar
AND free healthcare? I'm moving to Canada. Taking 8 weeks off seems a lot for America and that's what I'm taking, and only a couple of those weeks are paid. But 52 weeks!? Canada's where I need to be with my babies.

Lol yep. It's not exactly "free" healthcare though. You still have to pay 30-50 dollars per month, if you make under a certain amount a year though then its free. You just don't pay to see a doctor or go to the ER etc.

Well you are paying for it in taxes, so it's not exactly free.

Alberta and Ontario are free.. We haven't had to pay for a very long time now :-)

The amounts I hear you American ladies get back blows my mind! We have paid every year since having a child.....and thats after the $20,000 or so that comes off my pay cheque.

But....the 52 weeks is sweet, and America needs better parental leave laws

It's not free health care, and it's not exactly paid maternity leave. You pay into employment insurance, and your employer has the choice to "top you up" or not. And you don't even have to take the full leave yourself, you can split time with your SO. My husband just took 9 months off. Oh, and you get up to 17 weeks paid leave during pregnancy if you absolutely need to.

????
We don't fork over any money for healthcare.. just pay higher taxes (13%). Dentists, prescriptions and ambulance rides aren't covered. But family doctor, hospital visits, hospital stays are fully covered for everyone. I think you can go to an optometrist like once a year or something. Any other specialists, besides psychiatrists are covered (as far as I know)

Don't get full pay either it's basically the same as being on EI.. I think like 60% of your income. But yeah.. we are blessed to live in such an amazing country.

Just saw you're in BC didn't know it was different there. OHIP you don't pay anything.

In BC you have to pay MSP monthly.

When I looked into maternity leave it wasn't paid maternity leave.... I just had to be hired back after my maternity leave was over but didn't have to pay me for the time I was off.

It depends on your job. My husband got 93% for parental leave, though he didn't get his pension taken.

There are advantages and disadvantages to living in Canada and the U.S. Like another poster said, I've seen some amounts of 10000$ on tax returns, while most Canadians would be lucky to get money back. But usually we pay. Plus your online shopping is AMAZING! lmao.
