I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea. It will help teach everyone involved what to do if something happens.

Yes, school shootings are rare, but they usually have a high death/injury count. I read the second article and the person writing didn't like the idea of so much money spent on this "preenactment", stating it could be used elsewhere. But then again, no matter where money is spent, someone always has a better idea where it should go. So I guess if they want to do it and the Parents are okay with it, let them do it.

My daughter is in kindergarten and after what happened in CT, the teachers did a drill at their school. It breaks my heart that it's come to it, but I like knowing that my daughter knows what to do in case the situation arises.

A few weeks ago a murder suspect broke out of police custody and was running around by where my daughter's school is. Her school was on lock down. I felt better knowing that she wasn't going to panic because she learned protocol.

I think it's a good idea, to teach children what to do in such a terrifying scenario.
It's good to have a plan, whether the situation is likely to occur, or not.

What exactly is involved in an active shooter drill? In both elementary and highschool we had certain coded drills. Like code yellow was the one where we lock the doors close the shades and all hide in the farthest corner of the room quietly. Ive heard of some shooter drills were they have police officers running around shooting blanks to simulate the real thing. That I think is pushing it a little to far.

I agree, at least they will know that when they hear something like this that it is serious and need to pay attention to the teacher and learn where to go in case something like this happened. My daughter's school goes through tornado drills, fire drills etc. even though no schools around us have ever needed to use those skills, at least the kids know what to do IF it were to happen.

I've always had those drills. Never hurt me emotionally and it's good to have a plan.

My school must be a head of everyone else. We used to have "emergency" drills like that. They wouldn't tell us what we were doing but I remember use either having drills of use hiding under our desks or going into the closets.

I think with the alarming increase of school shootings and just overall bad people running around, it's definitely not a bad idea to be prepared. We always had drills for intruders where we would turn off the lights and lock the doors and hide under our desks so that the rooms looked empty.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about the simulated gunfire.

I would feel safe knowing my child/childrens school is taking control and teaching possible life saving skills in the event that something like this happened. I also think the children would feel safe knowing they have a plan.

I want drills. I also would like to see no glass doors and/ or bullet proof glass in schools. I would also like to see a way for the schools to go on a more advanced lockdown.
I registered my son for kindergarten this past Monday for the fall and his safety is my biggest concern. We live in a good area with little crime, but it is also a small town like Newtown & I think would be a target for a nutcase.
I'm 31 and we had drills for weather related incidents, but nothing that I can recall for intruders.

We had emergency drills like that in the schools I attended. I think it's great. Better safe then sorry.

Doors my schools always looked similar to this. They only had the one panel of glass in it. And it always had that metal webbing in it. Or they were solid doors with no windows.

We had several shooting drills in middle school. And younger. I didn't find it detrimental. It was like a fire drill, to me.
