We are in CT

They do code black drills where the teachers lockdown and they go into closets.

What they are proposing in the OP, is having a police officer pose as an intruder and drill from there.
The kids/staff/administration would be responsible for actually seeing and reporting the first sighting.

Elementary schools.

I do not agree with firing blanks. You can have *armed men running through the school and stuff without all that. Even though the children know it's a drill, do they really need the special effects to go along with it? Terrorist drills, tornado drills, fire drills, etc. can be performed and get the point across without theatrics.

I agree, the shooting blanks and an po posing as an intruder is taking it far.

They can practice the drills similar to how schools practice fire, tornado or earthquake drills. Going through the steps so they're prepared.

I think that may be to frightening. Especially if many of the kids haven't been exposed to gun fire.

thats how I felt but I wasn't sure if I was overreacting or not.

I like the drills they currently do, but the ones they are looking to implement with active intruders concern me.

I agree. I mean, I discussed the events of Newtown with my son. He's 4.5. As disturbing as it is, I think it was good to talk about it and ask what he would do or what he should do if someone came in threating them.

My heart still breaks for those kids and their parents. Yesterday was 3 months since they lost their sweet children. :-(

Even active intruders would be okay to me. Like having a policeman pose as an intruder and like you said have teachers/students responsible for reporting the intruder. But the gunfire is OTT.

Sandy Hook is about 15 minutes from us
When I told my daughter (6) about the tragedy (no details, simplified) there was a definite change in her charector and she became fearful and began not leaving my side. She has since gotten better, I can at least leave the room now

Poor baby. I cannot imagine being that close in proximity. I know you all were even more rattled b/c it just hit so close to home.

Aiden had a drill following the CT shooting, too. I like knowing my son's teacher will prepared, and he will have an idea of what to do in case anything awful like were to ever happen at his school.
