Shallow latch!

posted 15th Mar
Well I had DS on the 12 everything has been perfect so far he latched on right away with what appeared to be the perfect latch! I was so stoked! We didn't get pain until yesterday, that's when I started noticing the compression lines. We have a shallow latch, he's not getting much more than just nipple and I can't seem to fix it! I will be calling a lactation consultant in a little bit just curious if anyone has any tips? The compression lines are now starting to bleed from being rubbed raw and it hurts to latch. 😞 I seriously thought this was going to be ten times easier that bfing my DD. does it matter how big my breasts are? They are pretty massive for his little mouth... 😣 Thanks ladies!

Ouch!   it doesn't matter how big your boobies are. Mine are F's lol she'd suffocate in em though so I gotta squish them while she feeds hahah. Anyways, before I left the hospital one nurse told me to adjust her chin when she latched. Just take your finger and bring LO's chin down when he gets on the boobie. I found that helped a lot. Also, before he latches, make sure your nipple is lined up with his nose so he kid of has to raise his head to get on the boob. I you have to, break the latch until you're comfortable. It takes a bit of practice on both parts. I'd look up videos online too maybe to see how it's done? Good luck!

Have you tried a nipple shield?

I have had to actually pull down Dd's chin to open her mouth wider and then shove my boob in there. She's usually fine with latching, but she has her lazy days.

Yes! Nipple shields are awesome too!!

Also, for sore nips, I would rub a bit of bm on my nipple after a feeding, let it dry and then apply lanolin

Check out KellyMom. I personally would avoid the nipple shield, as it doesn't really address the problem, it's something extra to worry about, and then you have to try to get them off it later and used to the breast again. Just a hassle. You'll get it sorted, I believe in you!   Breastfeeding, Inc. is a good resource as well.

I've been doing exactly that for them being sore! With DD it took us what seemed like forever to sort our latch problems out. It was horrid. Hoping for a better experience this time!

Awesome! I found it did help with the healing.

With DD1 I also had a horrible time & gave up at 3 months. This time around it actually went a LOT smoother. It was still rough for the first 3-4 weeks but got better lol. I'm sooooo glad I stuck it out. I have a few friends who've had babies around the same time I did & gave up bfing within a week or two. It takes practice and it does hurt for a bit but I'm so glad I don't have to warm bottles & sterilize them & deal with ff spit up lol
