He climbs them. I told her to try one that just has up and down bars. I'm gonna go take her one tonight after DS gets off work to see if that helps.

Sorry I got defensive, I thought you were implying that she is abusing her child through neglect, when she really is a good mom. She would never deliberately do anything to hurt her son. I agree she needs to find something else because it is dangerous, but she definately isn't abusive. I'm gonna take her one of our tall baby gates that have bars that go up and down tonight, so hopefully that solves the problem.

No, I wasn't trying to imply she's abusing her child. She does need to be aware that if someone DOES call about it what could be said. Another thing that might help is mounting the gate a little higher...not so high the child could craw under it, but high enough that going over it is too hard. and spray the bars with pam so toes slide down and can't grip the wood(or whatever material the gate is made of).

I will definately tell her about the pam. Thats a good idea. They are metal bars, so that should work great, and be really easy to clean everyday, so it wont get gross.

Exactly. I hope your friend finds a better alternative, and that the child learns not to leave the bedroom at night. I know it took my older two a LONG time to learn that.

Tbh, i dont see how its any different at all from putting a child proof knob on the inside so he couldnt turn the knob, or a baby gate either. All the same purpose; keeping the baby in the room. The only reason i see to use a baby gate instead is to avoid dumb child abuse/neglect allegations. And IMO if she has the baby moniter and is a heavy sleeper that ot doesnnt wake her up, keeping him in his room until the moniter wakes her up is the safest thing if he is getting into things that could harm him.

Another thing she might try is putting chains or latches at the tops of the doors, and a safety lock on the toilet. I have had latches and chains on the doors of our houses, and I am actually the REASON my grandparents put a pin in their sliding glass patio door.

wouldn't putting a baby gate over the door that he can neither open or climb over be in effect the exact same thing as looking the door?
