My Baby has a heart murmur
posted 13th Mar
His doctor found it today....she said its odd that she hasn't heard it before and she thinks its probably a functional heart murmur but she is sending us to a cardiologist to make sure.
I'm trying not to freak out ;(.
He is almost 16 months.
Anyone have experience with this?

My 11 year old DD had one. Her's was diagnosed around 18 months....I think. She saw the cardiologist and it was determined to be benign. They sometimes catch it here and there it but it doesn't cause any issues and probably never will.

Yep. My son has a very pronounced murmur I can hear it by just putting my ear to his chest. It's caused by a hole in the heart, most times it closes on its own. But unfortunately my sons was too large that it wouldn't and he had other heart issues as well as a hole. The hole actually saved his life. He has had several surgeries, a couple key holes and one major open heart. It's patched up. And he's doing fine.
I hope everything goes well and it's just an innocent murmur.

My Dad has one and it turned out to be fine....but since we know nothing at this point I am so scared.
Can his pedi really make accurate guesses like a "functional" heart murmur?

People can live perfectly fine with murmurs.
Sometimes it requires surgery if problems occur or depending on the cause of the murmur. I am sure they will to scans to make sure that it isn't effecting him and decide if a valve replacement is needed at this point, or if it is due to something else. I would assume they would do an EKG to check heart function.
Don't stress until you know something, sometimes kids can grow out of them, or if it is a damaged valve often they can live a normal life following surgery.
Good luck!

DD they found hers at 12 months sent her to a cardiologist to have it checked and hers is very mild murmur

I was born with one and it closed by itself. My niece had one and it was pretty serious, she had open heart surgery when she was 3, she is a healthy 11 year old now. I would say that it's probably not serious because they would have detected it sooner. My nieces was so bad if you put your ear on her chest you were able to hear it. Also DS had one and it closed up by itself as well.

LO's pedi found a heart murmur at her 6 week appointment and sent her for an echo. We found out she does have a heart defect but the murmur was functional. She has a small septal defect, which basically boils down to a hole in the membrane the separates the left and right side of her heart. Thankfully it's so small that they don't think it will ever cause her any real problems, though her pedi does think it had a lot to do with her not being able to breastfeed and with her hands and feet staying purply all the time. At this point she has to see the cardiologist once a year for a follow up echo. So far no restrictions of any kind and according to her cardiologist she probably won't have any. An echo is just an ultrasound. It takes about 30-45 minutes depending on how cooperative your kiddo is. They'll put little nodes on his chest to monitor his heart rate and then put gel on his chest and use an ultrasound to look at his heart if he has one done. LO slept through the whole thing. Lol.
