Dry Socket

posted 12th Mar
Okay, I had a few teeth extracted Friday morning.

Since then I've had 3 separate large "clumps" come out. I've been following the directions the dentist gave me, no solid foods, no sucking, so spitting, gentle rinsing with salt water. I don't have any pain. I called to ask about the clump thing when it seemed like it was coming out and he said it was something that was disolvable and it was okay, just leave it alone.

Well, I've now lost it and the other 2, so one for each normal tooth I had pulled (I also had two wisdom teeth removed). It was like, white, soft, almost like gauze or cotton or something, about the size of a dime.

I'm too far to really have to worry about dry socket, right? I keep seeing things about how it could be a blood clot, but I lost the first one like 2 or 3 days ago and that doesn't hurt at all. The stitches are still in and everything.

I guess I'm just nervous. Any experience with this? lol

I don't know but I just had a root canal done last week and I swear it bothers me more now than before the procedure.

I hate dental work!

I'd say you're probably fine. Dry socket is more common 2-5 days after extraction, I think.

And it's so painful that you'd KNOW if you had it.

Dry socket is supposed to be extremely painful so as long as your pain free I wouldn't worry

That's what I figured. I mean, I'm in NO pain. I miss solid food, but I've felt great since the day after pretty much. Everyone says dry socket is so horrible, that by day 5 and no pain, I can't have it!

I just freak out when I spit stuff out of my mouth that isn't food (since I've had nothing but liquid since Thursday), lol. I had bone grafts in the 3 teeth that were removed (not the wisdom teeth) so at first I was afraid it was bone graft stuff, but that is like sand I guess, so it's different. And the stitches are all still in and obvious, so it's like there was something ontop of the stitches I guess, and that's what's come out.

I can't believe how easy this whole process has been to be honest. No swelling, no bruising, almost no pain. And since the infections have finally been dealt with I don't think I've felt this good in years.

It's amazing, isn't it? I had 31 or 32 pulled (my mouth was horrible) and the swelling the second week was the worst part. It was fine otherwise.

Oh but the gauze put in afterwards...I hate fabric in my mouth.

I can't even imagine! I had 5 teeth pulled, 2 were wisdom teeth that hadn't erupted yet. I was so ready to have it be horrible. Everyone was like "it's the most painful thing," and I had like no issues at all. It was seriously the easiest thing. I was put to sleep for it, which helped, but even the bleeding was done within a few hours. I'd say within 5 hours at the most all the bleeding had totally stopped.

I was fully conscious and lost count on shots to the mouth at 30. : x

Yep.
First time in 20 years I've been able to smile with complete confidence. I cried the first time I saw myself smile.

Awe, I am scared to death about having to get dentures!!

I have to go and have a second root canal and then a bunch of fillings still. You have a nice smile though!! I was going to say your teeth look like perfect.

The extraction and everything that followed was a piece of cake compared to how life was before.

And thanks.   All I do now is smile. hehe It's also changed me as a person. I'm a lot nicer than I used to be.

I'm so glad it worked out for you. I'm afraid this is where I'm headed.

At least a partial. I'd be so tempted to have all my back ones pulled and get a partial, but my dentist is so against it. He really wants me to do implants, which I know are better, but are SO expensive. . .

Did they give you a different option or were your teeth just too far gone?

And had you had dental work prior?

That's good you are happy!!!

And it takes longer because they only do a few at a time, as far as I know.

As long as I use an adhesive, dentures are really no different than having regular teeth. I only use an adhesive if I know I'll be eating though. Most of the time, I go without and I usually don't wear them all the time either.

Basically, I only wear them when I want to. My mom has dentures too (what contributed to my bad teeth is partially hereditary) but she is too self conscious to be seen without them. I don't care...my husband has seen me without them and I spent 3 1/2 months toothless while in school. It kind of forces you to get over being self conscious. lol
