my sons eating problem

posted 11th Mar
sorry for the weird title wasnt really sure how to "sum it up" lol anyway DS is 13 months old and recently has been having lots of problems with choking while eating. he has always gagged here and there which he still does but now he actually chokes to the point that hes not breathing, and he it choking on purre's not table foods. its to the point to where it happens at least once a day and sometimes results in him throwing up. I called his pedi and they brought him in to look at him. the pedi said it appears that DS has extra spaces on both sides of his mouth on top at the very back of his throat but was not 100% sure. he said it would explain the choking as food sometimes goes up instead of immediately down when swallowing. he also said that as DS grows the spaces would get bigger, explaining the sudden worsening of the problem. we now have an appointment at an ENT to do a scope of his throat to confirm and/or see what is causing it.

has anyone ever heard of this? he didnt give me any kind of "name" for what the problem may be or a lot of detail about it since he wasnt 100% sure so just wondering if anyone has any idea about this. Thanks! sorry its so long!

I didn't finish reading this but once I read the choking thing, I wanted to ask have they done a swallow study on him?

no not yet. they said if the ENT doesnt see anything physically wrong then that will be the next step. what all does that include? like what do they do exactly?

My son has a super sensitive gag reflux. And since about 12 months has gagged on food every day. Now that he's old it's more like 2-3 times a week. It's gotten way better.

hmm hopefully his throat is okay! My son did the same thing, almost daily when he was that age. But his was a texture issue..which is why he was on formula til 15 months. Now he eats so many more foods..took a while to get to this point because everything, even baby food made him gag.

A swallow study is really easy. They sit in a chair, in an xray room. They slowly give him different textured foods and liquids that have barium in them and watch it go down his throat to see how well it travels and where, if anywhere, it gets stuck. It's a good way to rule out things like reflux and what not!

Yes! And that's exactly what his pedi said. He has an over sensitive gag reflux. Yes it was awful! I didn't know what to do, even like water and juice make him gag and it usually ends up being thrown up.

Reflux is not always obvious. There's silent reflux that does not have any signs or symptoms.
