my baby doesn't want solids?!

posted 11th Mar
OK, so I wasn't overly concerned that my 6 month old is not into solid foods. He doesn't like a spoon, he would rather feed himself. I have tried steaming foods for him and allowing him to feed himself. He will do this maybe once a week! He just doesn't want foods. My pediatrician has made several suggestions, which I tried to no avail! Now I have the WIC office hounding me to MAKE him eat solids! I don't know what to think! To me, breastmilk is perfect food for him. But the nutritionist at the WIC office told me I HAVE to give him solids.

The nutritionist at the WIC office is an idiot. What does she want you to do, feed it to him through a tube?

Breastmilk is all baby needs for the first year. If he's not ready, wait a couple weeks and try again! Breastmilk is far more nutritious than any baby foods.

My Son didn't really get interested in baby food until he was like 8-9 months old but even then he preferred his bottle. He didn't eat table foods until he was 16 months old. I'd personally just nod and say mmhmm to the Nutritionist at WIC.

WIC nutritionists are dumbasses...

Seriously, look into Baby Led Weaning and other resources. By 6 months, DD wasn't into purees anymore. She wanted more and more of what we would have as our meals. (She started solids young for her reflux) But yeah, some kids are never into the pureed baby foods, and go straight to what we eat, like boiled carrots and broccoli and etc.

ETA: However, forgot to say, breastmilk is PERFECTLY acceptable and fine for the first year of life and SHOULD be the child's main source of nutrition.

Tell them to shove it. They don't NEED anything but BM until a year old.

WIC always tries to get on my butt for not taking them to a dentist yet. I'm pretty sure it's MY decision, they always try to act like you're a piece of crap if you don't do what they think you're supposed to.

Just keep trying every so often like you are. Eventually he'll take to it,

Breast milk is alllllll they need for the first year. Anything before then is just practice. He's fine. Force feeding him will only make him hate meal times.
Some moms purposely delay solids til a year.
He's getting a variety of nutrients, and tastes, from your milk. Screw WIC, they have idiots working there.

Show up with some research from La Leche League or other credible site on how it's not that big of a deal. Each baby is different and breastmilk has more calories and good stuff per ounce than any solid anyway.

Working for WIC does not make them educated on the subject.

That is maybe the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Just BF your baby, that is enough.

tell them to shove it. nothing wrong with that.. breast milk is all baby needs until a year. Yes, it's nice if they start learning to eat solids, but it's not needed.

my youngest didn't start solids until 7+ months (almost   she had no interest in it until then. when she started, she did JUST fine. she didn't have any catching up to do. really, babies younger than that just end up with most of it on their face, hands, chest, highchair, etc.. anyway. they rarely actually eat much.

and... it's just steamed veggies. They really are not getting much nutrition from those jarred carrots, beans etc... nothing like what they get from breast milk

My doctor really irritated me with that too! I'd say my son really got interested in solids at about 7.5 months, at 6 months the doctor said he should be eating 3 times a day. He didn't like it so I didn't force it and now at 8.5 months he's having about 2 meals a day.
