I need relief!!!
posted 10th Mar
I am exclusively breast feeding, we were supplementing but my supply came in two days ago so we stopped. We supplemented in order to get her bilirubin levels down, using a SNS. Wellll now I'm having issues getting relief in my boobs. I do not leak at all. I only have a let down on the side she's nursing on. Pumping is NOT getting anything out. I've taken 3 hot showers today hoping it would help. Nothing. My breasts are SOO huge (for me) and they are hot, red and purple and my nipples are still sore from the 5 hour long nursing session her and I had the other day while learning to latch and trying to get her to stop crying. (She was very uncomfortable and would only stop crying and sleep while on the boob). We nurse on demand both sides if possible. But it isn't nearly enough to drain both boobs, not even enough to drain one. Please help with relief quickly. I'm dying. Lol

Hmm I wonder why pumping isn't doing the trick?
That's always how I got relief.

I'm not sure. I never had a problem pumping with my first but this one, I can't even get 5ml. I can't get a let down going. I'm using a Medela pump, and it's basically a waste of $300 right now.

What type of pump are you using? Lay in a hot tub and rub and squeeze your boob until milk comes out, you may have a clogged duct or the start of mastitis.

I would try hand expressing. That is usually easier to get milk out if you are having trouble with the pump. You can google proper techniques to help and kind of stimulate similarly to baby. Even when I wasn't producing much I could pretty much drain everything hand expressing compared to the drops I was getting with pumping.

If its clogged ducts and mastitis or either of them I have it in both boobs, entirely.
My nipples hurt so bad I try not to touch them unless E's hungry and she's nursing so they can get a relief.

There were times that I had to hand express at school into a toilet with my first because I left my pump at home and I went to school 2 hours away from home, I used to hand express effectively but even with trying to hand express, it's not even forming a little "bubble" of milk at my nipple. :/

Hold your breast while she feeds
Try hand expression, it is MUCH more effective than ANY pump sold when done properly

Get her to nurse for even a couple seconds then pump.
Or get your DH to suck on your breast until your let down starts then pump or hand express to get relief.

Then I suggest running a bath, as hot as you can stand, and laying belly down for at least ten minutes and the massage your breasts. Then nurse your baby while on all fours with your breasts dangling above her, the gravity will help.

I just expressed in the shower or made DD eat. Expressing relieved a bit, but didn't increase supply like pumping.

When I first started breastfeeding I was soooo engorged. It was terrible. I would get in the shower as hot as I could stand it & hand express. Everyone tried to get me to put frozen cabbage leaves in my bra, but I never tried it. I'm not sure if that's an old wives tale or not, but supposedly it helps drain the milk out. It sounds to me like your breasts may be getting infected, that happened to my mom with my youngest brother & that's how hers were. Also, do you have a number to a lactation consultant you can call? Mine helped me out soooo much with any issues I had while breastfeeding. They will help you figure out what is going on & hopefully get everything sorted out. Good luck!
