Plus Size?

posted 9th Mar
This might be an odd question, but I noticed when I was at JC Penny's the other day that they had the "misses" section, and the "women's." Women's was plus sized (xl and up) and misses was sm-large basically.

I don't know, it sort of bugged me I guess. As if women were not plus size were not "womanly." I don't recall seeing this before (And it took me a while to figure out why, in women's, I couldn't find my size, lol). I've always seen is as plus size, or some other name. Never "women's"

So, is this common? Have I just never noticed this?

I think it's the other way around, in trying not to insult people for being bigger. What's the other option? Women's and big women's?

That is odd, most of the stores I go to still have a misses, women's and a plus size section.

yeah, it's common. they've been doing the "misses" and "women's" thing for awhile. i know it was that way when i worked for kohl's about 6 years ago. i think "plus sized" sounds fat, lol. but... i understand what you're saying.

!

maybe OP missed the plus size sign? I was at JC penny last week.. they still had a petite, misses, women's and plus size.

petite is shorter
misses- younger style clothes
women's more mature, but same sizes
plus size.. either 14 or 16 and larger

I guess I've missed that.

I mean, I get juniors, then misses, but women's bugs me. I mean, I'm not in juniors because I"m not a junior. Am I not a woman because I'm not in "women's." Plus sized is just that, the upper sizes. People don't like it because they don't like wearing "plus size" but, I just think calling it women's seems dumb, like that's what a womanly size is. No, it's plus. It's bigger. That's fine, it's descriptive. They have small, medium, and large. if they put smaller sizes together, it would make sense to call them smaller. Likewise, plus size, larger size, whatever makes sense, it's descriptive of WHAT it is. Juniors are for juniors. I guess the whole "woman's" sort of bugged me, lol.

I know it is trying not to insult women for being bigger, but is the other option insulting women who aren't "curvy?"

It's just size descriptions. In trying to use these other things, it almost makes it MORE of an issue. In trying to sugar coat it. A person isn't bad or ugly for being in a larger size, so why can't be it plus sizes? When we remove those words we sort of give credence I think to this idea that it's bad to be plus size. That we need to use OTHER words to not upset people. Why? I guess I don't get it.

And I guess I just go shopping so rarely I didn't realize this was common, haha

No, there was juniors, misses, then womens. No plus size. Womens was plus, misses was small-medium, and juniors was, well, juniors. Not kids, those were elsewere. Juniors were teenagers.

yeah, this is how most of our store are: juniors, misses, and women's. but the misses sections usually DO carry sizes up to XL. and then the women's starts at like 1X and so on. or some places, it starts with 16 or 18 or something.

IDK. I don't venture into women's because it's all old-lady.

lol! I don't like a lot of it, but I've accepted I might be too old for juniors. Sigh. I just don't think I can get away with a lot of those styles anymore. Plus, I can't wear a lot of their jeans. They do not fit my hips/butt I find, haha.

Juniors jeans don't take my hips into consideration.   I do shop Misses but I notice that stuff in the woman's section is just yucky and mostly looks like old curtains.

It's a huge reason why I stick to specific stores. I'm a NY&Co whore because their curvy jeans fit me PERFECTLY.

I LOVE that store. And yeah, I run into that problem. I'm like, between styles I guess. I'm too old for leggings and little crop shirt hipster stuff which is mostly what they're selling in juniors around here at least. I like NY&Co because it's grown up clothing, but it's cute stuff. I hate the jeans that go up to my belly button, but I also don't need half my ass sticking out, haha. I need a forever almost 30 store, haha.

NY&Co, Limited, and Banana Republic are my staples.
