Do you carry life insurance?
posted 9th Mar
Do you or your spouse have life insurance? I'm debating whether to get it or not. It will be 33 bucks a month unless I wait until I finally quit smoking, and then it will be 16, for a 100k policy.
DH's father (well, the man that raised him) recently passed very unexpectedly, and he had a small life insurance policy that he left to DH and his mother. It made me wonder... I'm young but I could also die anyday, completely unexpected.
I am scared of leaving my family with nothing. I'd at least love to be able to leave enough money for DH to pay the house off or something.

My dh has one through work. His dad died in an accident and left nothing. My dh and his siblings had to pay for everything. He doesn't want the same for us if something were to happen. Also like you mentioned as well, to have extra to pay off the house.

We have mortgage protection. If one of us dies the house will be paid off by it. We also have income protection in case one of us get ill and can't work we will still have the income because we are insured.

YES! You BOTH need life insurance.
I do t have a much of a job, but I'm insured as insurance money will help my husband pay for replacing my role for a while. If I croak he will need to pay for many more services to care for our daughter and the house. Financially we are better than good so neither would suffer financially if the other died, but the policy would help.
For those who aren't better than good, not having life insurance would likely lead to struggling unless they have some rich relatives willing to provide for a couple of years.
I have know idea if the policy you are looking at is good, but get a good policy.

This is what I meant to link to but I goofed:
Life Insurance
If you die with no life insurance, your family will most likely be stuck in a dire situation and have to make drastic changes, all the while grieving you. You should have eight to 10 times your yearly income set aside in a term life policy. That way, if you pass on, your family can invest the money and, at a 10% return, replace your income.
This is something that shifts more often than you think. Every time you get a raise, have a child, buy a house or have some other significant life event happen, you need to make sure that you have enough insurance to cover it. Don’t take this lightly; one-third of adults in the United States carry no life insurance, and more than half a million in the prime of their lives die prematurely each year.

My husband and I both have life insurance through his work. I know that it started out worth 250k for him and 100k for me but with every year he puts Into it that amount increases. I he ever leaves this job he takes our life insurance with him.
Our children are insured as well for 20k each.
ETA: I'm 26 and DH is 29, we've had a life insurance policy since we had our son 6 years ago.

How does life insurance work? I mean does it cover any circumstance of death? Illness? Getting hit by a car? Falling out of a window? Plane crash? Struck by lightning? What about when you get old and die of natural causes? What if I buy a life insurance policy here, and then I go back to Iraq and die there? Assuming the premium is paid up.

I dont know about coverage if you move to Iraq. Good question for the insurance agent.
I believe as long as a person is declared dead (not missing) life insurance is paid (assuming the beneficiary didnt kill the insured).
Years ago insurance wouldnt pay for suicides but that changed.
