Sleep training

posted 8th Mar
We've been co sleeping on and off pretty much since DS was born. He would usually start off in his bed and then come sleep with us once he woke up. Now he's refusing to sleep in his bed at all. SO and I are to the point where we want our bed back. We have had tried using the no cry sleep solution and it didnt last very long before we were in the same routine so we are looking at trying something different.

What are some sleep training methods? What has worked for you? I really don't want to let him CIO but I'm starting to think it will be the only thing that will work. I'm barely sleeping anymore because DS is such a bed hog and his movement throughout the night keeps waking me up. I just need some guidance and any advice that may help us transition him to his bed.

He's too young for CIO so don't start thinking about it now. How do you put him to sleep now? Maybe push the crib against your bed and every night move it further away until it's in the spot you want it. [It being the crib lol]

Way too young for CIO, but I also think my youngest (6 months) is too young to CIO. But have you tried a side-rail crib? It's co-sleeping but he'll be in a "crib" instead of in your bed. Or put his crib next to your bed and move it further every week or something until he's comfortable?

I definitely wouldn't try CIO, he's way too young for that. We just transitioned LO to her crib from co-sleeping. (She'll be 5 months old tomorrow.) I've just been laying down with her in our bed until she goes to sleep and then putting her in her crib. When she gets up to eat, I feed her in our bed and then put her back in her crib. So far so good.

Y'all may have misinterpreted since their aren't any dates for his age on my profile but he's 14 months old. Everything I've read or heard about with CIO says it shouldn't be started til after a year. Our room isn't big enough to have his crib in there so that really isn't an option.

Okay at 14 months, I still wouldn't CIO but I don't even let my 4 and 5 year old's either. I'm not a CIO person though. Anyway, I would start out with his mattress on your floor, next to your bed or where ever, and start with small steps. For 14 months, that's all he's known is your bed so it's going to take more than a time or two for him to understand. Honestly though, mine still crawl in our bed every once in a while.

EDIT: I actually just read through your previous posts and it sounds like your SO is putting a lot of pressure on you to get it done ASAP, let him know that it takes him. Mention to him that he doesn't like being without you at night so it's going to take lo some time to learn to sleep by himself without mommy. I mean, we're adults and we still co-sleep. Time and patience gets you a lot of places

Honestly, I tried my hardest not put it all on SO in this post because I didnt want it to make him seem like a bad guy but I'm not ok with letting DS CIO at all! I do want him to sleep in his own bed, because I really am getting smurffy sleep but I think id just as easily give up sleeping all together than to let him cry himself to sleep. I think the mattress on the floor may work. At least for now. I wouldn't mind him sleeping in our room if I could still sleep, so actually that is probably the perfect plan for right now. Thank you.

I like the comment about SO needing to understand it takes time. Mine wants his bed back too but my little man is just 13 months and has slept with me every single night of his life. I've never once had a sitter or an overnight away. His crib is right next to my bed and he will sleep in it sometimes half the night but wakes up to get in bed with me. He wakes up crying like he's scared to death, and holds onto my neck so tight he's literally shaking. So I'm not willing to let him cry right next to me when he's honestly scared. Dad is convinced he's "working" me and knows exactly how to get his way. I don't think he's old enough to "plot" this whole thing out!
