Resources for parents of a 32-weeker
posted 8th Mar
I'm not 100% certain yet, but based on the feedback I've received so far, it looks like I'm being induced later today. I'm about to hit 32 weeks today, and have been hospitalized due to serious pre-eclampsia symptoms and complications. Anyways, I'm trying to prepare myself a bit in case I have to deliver soon. My previous pregnancy was also premature delivery but not this early ( 35wks4 days), and DD didnt have to be in the NICU. Does anyone know of a few sites/resources I can review regarding the NICU and caring for baby while there? Right now most interested in knowing:
- What to expect if baby is in NICU
- Breastfeeding
- How does visiting/caring for baby work? Can I stay there? If no, what do most people do when they have to leave baby at NICU?
- Under what circumstances does a baby usually leave NICU to go home?
- Does insurance usually cover NICU stays for baby?
- and of course, how do I avoid/be prepared for possible barriers to bonding and other possible things I need to be aware of with caring for preemies?
I kinda started looking at the March of Dimes website but have not spent much time with it yet. Any other sites/resources anyone has found helpful? Thanks a bunch

I was hospitalized at 32w but not induced til 34. Hopefully they can get your bp under control and keep lo cooking.
My nicu was very pro breast feeding and skin to skin. If baby could keep temp out of isolette you could skin to skin all day if you wanted.
Mine parents could visit 24/7. I could change diaper and take temp before nurse did assesment then feed her myself.
My hospital had rooms for breastfeeding moms that lived over 25miles away to stay on campus. Big main childrens has a Ronald McDonald house for parents.
To leave baby had to maintain temp out of isolette in crib, have no apneas or bradycardias and eat all feedings by mouth. Plus gain/maintain weight. Also all babies born under 36w had to do a car seat challenge where they sat in seat for at least an hour and kept all vitals up.

Most of those are questions that will be addressed by your hospital before you deliver...A neonatologist will come talk to you before hand and if not request it thats their job to inform and comfort you before this decision is made its rare mind you but some 32 week babies depending can come out of this with minimal NICU care and after about a week of monitering go home some stay for months it all depends on your LO...My son was born via csection under similar conditions and was in the NICU for a few weeks strictly to gain weight and we succesfully breastfed after just three days of him being on tube feedings of my colustrum and breast milk lots of mommies succesfully breastfeed in the NICU so while its harder because of the pressure for success no worries they dont have to give your baby formula just because its preemie or will the let it starve the rules of newborns still apply to preemies when feeding hun so dont let that pressure you and feel free to PM me about it and any other questions I will try to be as detailed as I can for you prep really does help and I know induction may seem scary this early but the pressure of the birth canal could help get rid of the fluid in LOs lungs and possibly make chances better for them breathing and such and going home faster than a csection so try momma knowing that yes itll be more tiring probably on you both but has the chance to be truely better the odds are in your favor right now so hang in there and if you have questions I will try and help and I have some websites and such for clothes and other moms who have gone this route that have helped me ...I am also having another preemie this time around tho for different reasons so I am loaded to go on info since I will be at a diff hospital again

That's what I am really hoping for! I was really hopeful that I'd just be sent home on bed rest for a few more weeks, but lastnight they said my kidneys are not working well ( based on the fact that my 24-hr protein test showed its just getting worse since Monday). I won't know more until later this morning, but I'm trying to remain hopeful that baby will stay in longer. It just feels like every time things look hopeful, the test results show something different. I feel good, baby is doing fine- so it's frustrating that internally I'm not doing as well.
Anyways, thanks so very much for the information. It's helpful to have insight and at least some idea of what to prepare for if I have to deliver soon and have baby in NICU. I really appreciate it!

Thank you SO Very much for the feedback/advice/ info. I wasn't sure what I should even ask of the hospital staff so glad you have me some information about what I should expect/ask about. I also appreciate your willingness to offer support and insight. I was thinking people would suggest some websites to read/review, but having the opportunity to hear from other mothers who have been in this position is so helpful too. Thanks again! I'll PT you soon;)

When my cousin had her baby and his was in the nicu, she was able to stay at the Ronald Mcdonald house and they also helped with food and things.

Quick update: Finally going home! Pre-eclampsia seems to be at mild status for now so I will head home on bed rest. Not at all ideal considering I can't work, but so happy I don't have to deliver right now. With baby #1 I was on bed rest for a day or 2 and ended up being induced. But at least I can go home and get better prepared.

my daughter was born an 33w4d and she is still in the nicu..you may visit when ever you like, the only time they wont allow you to come in is during shift change(that's my hospital all maybe different) but in order to come home, they must be gaining weight, maintain body temp and take all feedings by mouth..now if your baby doesn't have the suck swallow breath technique down then you are able to pump and take your milk in with you..but if your baby cam do that then your more than welcome to breastfeed..make sure you let them know that's what you wanna do and if you can produce enough right away then they will not give your baby formula but they may add a milk fortefier to your breastmilk for extra calories
