vit k shot? (home birth)

posted 7th Mar
so im signing all of my finale papers for my midwife before the birth in just a few weeks! and i ran across the vit k and eye goop one, we have decided not to have the eye drops for the baby, they really arnt needed in my case. but i really havent found much info on the vit k, ive found a few info sites that say its really only needed if the birth is traumatic, and some say its a must. im kind of leaning towards not having it done, just because were trying to have this whole process as natural as possible, and we also dont vax. so if you opted out of it for your baby, why did you make that choice?

I actually just learned a lot about this in my mother/baby nursing class which is taught by a midwife. She highly recommends them because babies do not have the ability to clot very well and because of the umbilical cord being cut they have a chance for hemorrhage. I personally would go for the vitamin K injection.

We are not doing it, but we are doing the drops   I need to buy those now actually, lol.

It is pretty serious if the baby does clot, it could cause death, but it's really rare. I think it's under 1% of babies if I'm remembering correctly.

yep   The umbilical cord was just an example but they could possibly hemorrhage because of other things as well. The injection is better than the drops because its absorbed a lot faster. They do have the clotting factors they are just too immature to work around birth. I think its around 2 weeks when they mature.

We opted not to get the shot with all three of our kids and will agian with this one. I researched it and for our family its just the right choice. Babies blood starts to clot on its own at 8 days after birth .
