Their 1st name we will and do use middle names when they are in trouble now we have to figure something else out for that because my step son has his DHs middle name and my son is named after his daddy so we cant be yelling at one saying JAMES and they know "which" JAMES we are referring to lol guess we messed up there

Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it's stupid. Lucky for me he's my child and I can name him based on what I want. That last part of your post makes no sense. :/

Anyway, thanks for your responses ladies.  

Both kiddos go by their first names despite everyone's best attempts to give them nicknames. I know a lot of people who don't, though. I was a teenager before I learned my grandmother's first name.

My great aunt calls her Josie but I think its because shes named after my grandma her sister. Everyone else has nicknames from Dylan

My FIL goes by James around us and his wife's family but his family calls him Al (which is his middle name). Which reminds me, I've been meaning to ask him why. Lol

I see a lot of this in the South, especially with boys.

I think a lot of people use family names as the first name and since there are several people by that name, they all go by the middle.

Out of the four guys I work with, three go by their middle name.

That is my situation exactly. My son is named after his Grandfather and uncle who also go by that name.

But if she ever meets my MIL she'll most likely be called by her middle name on occasion.

we are going by her first name... but i think she'll be like me where everybody calls her by her nickname.

I think it's a southern thing, too. My MIL calls all of the kids and grandkids by their middle names.

I don't call my kid by his middle name, but his dad, grandpa, and granddad all go by their middle name. To me, it's weird. I never understood it. Lol.
So there is Samuel Ray Sr, and Samuel Ray Jr. They both go by Ray Sr and Ray Jr. Unless at work And my boyfriends name is Nathaniel Ryan. His whole family calls him Ryan. I call him Nathan though since that's what I've always known him as.

Sometimes I call my kids by their middle name, but not often. I've never understood why parents give their kid a name but go by their middle name. Why not just make the middle name the first name if you plan on calling him that? If that makes any sense. Like my aunt just had a baby they named Aaron Eli but they call him Eli... again, I don't get it.
