Night feedings..........help!!!!!!

posted 7th Mar
When and how do you stop night feeding? LO is about 15 months and I'm pretty sure he only night feeds for sucking comfort. (we also co-sleep and he's never taken to a paci) He does not eat much table food because I think he's getting enough or to much formula still. (we have not went to full milk yet, we are 50/50 because he's got milk protein issues) I make bottles every 24 hours. I make five 7oz and three 4oz at 5pm every night and they last till 5pm the following day. So anyways he still goes thru about 3 bottles a night and would like to stop it so he can start to get hungry and eat more table food and well stop night feeding because I don't think its needed. Do I just give him a sippy cup of water and if he wants a drink he's got that and forget about formula all together or could he really be wanting it at night cuz he's not eating much? Sorry so long, TIA for any input

Have you tried almond milk, coconut milk, soy, or goats? With my youngest she went from bm/formula to almond milk. Cows milk just constipated her. I would start by cutting back 1 night feeding at a time. Switch to water then slowly nothing. At 15 months I believe the recommended milk intake is 24oz. Maybe try cutting back on the milk/formula intake altogether to see if that ups the table foods. If he still isnt eating I would talk to his doctor and see if maybe something else is going on.

At fifteen months that is really a fair bit too much milk in my opinion.. I'd start first with the night bottles cut them out one at a time and just offer water instead and then same with the day ones.. At 12-18m my boys had 200ml of milk a day and that was it, the rest was table food..
I think if you start cutting down on the milk more he will be hungrier and eat more proper food
Just start slowly, maybe cut bottle amounts in half to start with?

I don't cosleep, but my son 10 months takes a bottle around 11pm and is then good until around 6am and then goes straight down until 9am. I give him an 8 oz. bottle with 2 tablespoons of baby rice mixed in that seems to keep him full all night.

Ok, thanks. My oldest had to go to soy and when he was 3 he was able to go to 2% milk. I'll try cutting at night to see where we land

You know you aren't supposed to put cereal in the bottle its a choking hazard (among many other issues) plus its a myth that it helps them sleep longer.

Yep. I really think its the quantity of milk/formula that causing the issues. With the numbers you posted thats almost 50oz of milk a day. Just slowly cut back and hopefully that helps.

I am in the same situation as you only we use the boob instead of formula. He did not start big people food till close to 12 months and he still nurses throughout the night.

I have been trying to get him to nurse less so I have been offering more food before he nurses along with a sippy with water or juice. I know he needs his morning nursing for more than just comfort but all the other times I think my LO is just board or wanting comfort. All those times I try to offer food.

Maybe you should just start offering more food for your LO. I am not sure about night because I nurse and its a little different. Maybe you could switch to water?

I did this for a couple of months with my current son and with my two older children as well and never had a problem with any of them choking, and I don't believe it is a myth considering my youngest was getting up 4 times a night until I started putting the rice in his bottles. Now he's older and eating more solid foods so it is no longer necessary. But it certainly worked.

It actuly can make sleep harder for them and cause a lot of gas and other issues, but probably not so much at 15 months. Mostly just the choking issue at that age

You do realize that is bad for baby's teeth, right?

I know it's hard at first, but I would give water in the cup. 15 months is old enough to cry it out.

I started this with all three of my boys at around 8 months and it worked wonderfully without any of the issues mentioned. I'm sure each child is different. Thankfully all three of my boys did wonderfully with this and I was able to get some sleep. It's just an option that worked for my children. The OP can choose to try it or ignore it. She simply asked for advice and I told her what worked for my children.
