Tips for TV in my toddlers room?

posted 7th Mar
My son really likes some TV shows and he watches them everyday. Right now its diego and my big big friend. Sometimes though his father or I want to watch our show and my son gets very upset that hes missing his daily show. Anyway, there was a sale at walmart and his father came home with a little TV. I guess he thought it would be a good idea for our almost 4 year old to have this TV in his room. We have talked about it before but have never done it because 1)Im worried our son would watch TV when he should be sleeping 2)Usually if he watches TV its kind of in the background as we are all in the living room together. Having him off in his own room watching it just seems too strange and disconnected for me.

Has anyone done this before, and if so how did it go?
Also, any ideas on what the best way is to police this so it doesnt get out of hand?

I don't think kids should have a TV in their room.

We bought a t.v. for my 4-yr-old son's room too. We haven't started yet so idk how it's going to go but I'm planning on not having it on longer than an hour or so a day. Even less than that when he starts full day kindergarten next year. We've never let him set anything up so he doesn't know how, so I don't think he'd turn it on in the middle of the night... as long as you have rules & stick by them, then it shouldn't be a big problem, good luck

I don't / won't have tvs in my kid's rooms. We only have 1 tv, which we rarely watch. If we do, it is family tv time. I personally think screen time should be limited.

We just have a kindle fire.. and DS watches some shows on there occasionally through Netflix.

I NEVER had a tv in my room until I moved in with SO at the age of almost 19 lol.

I agree with this. Maybe put it in the kitchen or something so YOU could watch it?

DD1 is 6 & has a tv in her room as well as a personal DVD player. She's not allowed to use either at bedtime unless its the weekend. She's the type of kid who would stay up til the sun came up watching tv at bedtime if we allowed it lol.

My son has a TV in his room. He is rarely even in his room since we spend most of the day all in the living room together. But he does watch 30 mins of TV at night before bed. It's his private wind-down time and I don't see anything wrong with it. I set the TV on a timer so it will shut off in 30 minutes. He is usually asleep by then but even if he's not he never gets up to turn it back on. If he did, I would take the remote away.

I had a TV in my room when I was little but I actually rarely used it because I seemed to like being around my parents (weird I know).

My son definetly knows how to turn on TVs, and computers, and my iphone. Hes very...technical. Honestly, we have the TV at all waking hours at my house. Half the time its not being watched but I am seriously addicted to the background noise. Alot of the time its just on the news (my son has learnt to hate the news lol) or the country music station.

I cant put it in the kitchen because the kitchen is kind of the same room as my living room.

Keep a TV out of a childs room. That is the best advice out there!

It is a very bad idea for a TV to be in a child or adults bedroom.

DD has a TV in her room. I wish it wasn't, but it was the only place we could put it. DH and I were going nuts watching her cartoons. It's not hooked up to cable. We only put on her movies and cartoons on DVD. We unplug it when we don't want her watching TV.
