Jaundice and Supplementing

posted 7th Mar
Baby's bilirubin rose back up so the pediatrician ordered we supplement every other feeding with formula. She's trying to figure out now if my breastmilk is causing the problem   Do I need to pump every time she gets a bottle of formula? I was thinking of having DH feed her while I pump, but I'm not sure....

No. She may have to be readmitted tomorrow if it isn't improving. I hate the thought of giving her anything on a bottle (she gets so confused!) but I'm willing to try anything. She already eats every 2 hours and has more than plenty wet and dirty diapers, so we know it's not a volume issue.

My sons pedi said to supplement for jaundice (he was a newbie then he's two now) and u never did. I was afraid to. I nursed more and longer. He's fine of course. But if its really bad you can use a dropper and give a little formula after nursing. I'm iffy about adding bottles but whatever you do baby will probably be okay.

If its content and not amount then maybe a diet change?
I don't believe a woman can produce inadequate milk, there are controllable factors there.

I wish I could! It was supposed to be nice and sunny today, but of course that didn't happen. Crossing my fingers that it is nice tomorrow. It's supposed to warm up to the 60's this weekend with plenty of sun.

...I am really missing Florida right this second, lol

The doc thinks there is something in my breastmilk blocking her liver from producing the necessary enzymes to break down the bilirubin. I dunno what in my diet could cause that.

Hmm never heard if that..
In that case I'd mix feed but still try to keep the bond benefits of direct nursing,
I'd say just nurse more than bottle to avoid confusion or bottle easy flow preference, but go both.

When I was in the hostipal, trying to breast feed we ended up having to supplement. The nurses got us to use either a medicine cup or a syringe. It causes less confusion apparently.

this is what WE had to do... and it was awful... first i would try to BF feed one boob for 10 mins, then the other for 10 mins. after that SO had to supplement her with formula and breast milk from my last pump, while he did that i pumped for as long as i could on both boobs. we had to do this every 2 hours from start to start. it was HORRIBLE. the whole process took over an hour, not to mention diaper changing... If i could have done it again i would have done formula as soon as this crazy schedule was in place. I had 5 Lactation consults pressuring me when my milk hadnt come in, i had a flat nipple, and my other nipples ducts were clogged! then when my milk did come in it was so much that i was so engorged that i couldnt get anything out and couldnt sleep from the pain. YOU DO WHAT YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH!! YOU WILL NOT BE A BAD MOM WITH WHATEVER DECISION YOU MAKE!! Remember that!!! I wish someone told me that. I regret breast feeding. My baby and I have an amazing connecting and bond even without doing it. My MIDWIFE was the one who said to stop, she was so mad at the lactation consults she called and ripped them a new one. DD was losing too much weight from not eating and i was getting very bad PPD and physically sick!!
