When Should I Take Him In?

posted 7th Mar
Just woke up to my son crawling into bed with me. Reached my arm out, and he was HOT to the touch. Took his temperature and it's 103.

He has never had a fever this high before (he's two weeks shy of being 4). When should I take him in?

I'd call the pedi as soon as it opens...

put him in a tub of luke warm water, not cold water, give him childrens tylenol asap. if his fever does not break you can give him childrens advil. if you are really concerned you can take him now. if the fever gets any higher take him immediately. the bath should bring down the fever quickly while the tylenol has a chance to work. good luck

I don't take my son in unless it is higher than 104 and doesn't come down with meds within a hour or so. Fevers are going to be higher at night then during the day. If high fevers continue after 2 days i take him in. I do motrin first and alternate with tylenol if the fever doesn't break.

He puked twice yesterday morning and once in the evening before bed. Has been warm since then (but was not this hot until now--took his temperature around 5 hours ago and it was 102.1)

Unless it doesn't come down with meds don't waste your time going in. You can alternate tylenol and ibprofen.

I'd give him some tylenol and see if it helps at all. If not then I would call the pedi. but i would try to do as much as possible before taking him in.

do not wait until it gets higher than 104, he is a child and can go into febrile seizure. not always but letting it rise can be very dangerous to him. Follow your gut instinct.

Id say tummy bug, alternate tylenol and motrin and a luke warm bath (my 4yo has a tummy bug) and of course plenty of fluids

Febrile siezures are generally caused by a rapid spike not just rising slowly.

i personally would not want to chance it with my 4 year old. every one is different in the amount of heat their bodies can handle. im just saying, if it were my child, i would not hesitate to take them in. better safe than sorry.

Trust me all they do at the hospital is give them more medicine and see if it comes down at least 1/2 a degree. My daughter runs 105 and that is all they will do. I mean unless they are dehydrated or anything like that.
